What is so bad about Nassau??

Nassau is great to me. It doesn't require any fancy excursion that costs a bunch of money. The Jitney rides are awesome and the drivers are hilarious. You can usually find cheap/tasty drinks and cheap/tasty food all over.

Its okay, but we've been there a zillion times and always with at a minimum four or five other cruise ships.

I have okay times at some of the hotel day passes I've done. Nothing great.

The last time we decided to take the water taxi and it was okay going but coming back there seemed to be an issue with the steering and we practically had to float back, it took us 1 1/2 hours. There doesn't seem to be any regulations. Any old boat can qualify as a water taxi.

we actually really enjoyed nassau. we didnt book an excursion and just went in to town. we wandered around a bit and found a small, hole in the wall rum shop. they took GREAT care of us and we just had a wonderful time with the store owners.

we dropped the rum off back at the ship and then contracted with a local tour guide to take us around the island. for $30 a person he took us EVERYWHERE. we got to see all the sights with a true local. everyone knew dan, and dan knew everyone. we got to see all sides of the island, from the super wealthy's homes to the less fortunate. he took us to atlantis for a bit, and then took us to the fish fry for some conch.

i really do think that each port is what you make of it. we had also read the bad reviews, but nassau turned in to one of our favorite ports, thanks to an open mind and a great guide.

I love your attitude and agree with you that keeping an open mind can allow you to make the most of your short time in port. We hired a private guide in another port (Cozumel) and had the best time. Some ports are more conducive to doing it on your own vs tours. Your suggestion sounds like a great idea for our Nassau port visit in April. Thanks for your post. :)

You really should do your homework.. there's plenty to do here.

Snorkeling and diving, glass bottom boats, private islands, parasailing, stingrays and dolphins, Powerboat adventures to Exuma, seqways, Foodie tours, Sailing, boat races, regattas (in season). Cultural events, junkanoo, car races, cricket matches, historic and cultural tours, and much, much more. Those who can't find something interesting to do or see haven't done their homework.

Atlantis is the LAST place I would look to while visiting the bahamas..

We also have a small zoo and a pirates museum as well as the national art gallery and chocolate factory.

Hello Subbagirrl,

My family (2-adults & 2-teens) will be visiting Nassau March 28th. Will there be any local events happening during that time...boat races, regattas, cricket matches? This only our second time visiting Nassau. The first time we spent the day at Atlantis, which is very nice. But, this time I would like to see the island and the people, not tourists:o After reading a couple other posts, I'm torn between the Bahamas Segway tour or finding Greg Arnett's tour (requesting the Arastra Zoo, Chocolate Factory & Festival Place). The ship won't be arriving until 1:00pm and I would like to be back onboard by 5:30pm, so we will only have about 3-4 hours to spend exploring. What would you suggest?

Since you're arriving mid week.. and Easter week, I doubt you'll find a regatta or cricket match.. these are usually weekends, since they are local events and locals work during the week.

You don't need a tour to go to Ardastra Zoo or the Chocolate Factory.

Check with Graycliffs as to what time they are doing tours that day... and check the zoo as well for show schedules.. you can easily walk to the chocolate factory and grab a cab from their to the zoo.

Festival Place IS part of the port. You need to go thru it in order to exit into Nassau.

With such a short stay, you won't have time for much else.

Hello Scubagirrl,

Thanks for the quick response. I printed a map locating all the local attractions & I almost forgot about the Chocolate Factory...thanks for the reminder! I'll search for their website later this evening. I'm so excited only 70ty days! I think the kids will really enjoy seeing these attractions.

Thanks again!

We like Nassau. Been twice and do plan to return. First trip we booked a tour of the city and a semi sub tour through NCL. Still had time to do a little shopping before we returned to the ship. Second time we just shopped on our own and got a horse and buggy tour.

You have to pass the straw market and enjoy the stores.

Also for us we have no desire to go to Atlantis. Sure it's got a casino, water park ans aquarium but for what you spend on tickets to go, I can enjoy the city and shop and probably have money left over.
