Rare Turtles06 Posted January 8, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2013 On our return to Ushuaia from Antarctica with Nat Geo/Lindblad, we will have a few hours in the morning in Ushuaia, maybe more, maybe less, after we disembark and before our charter flight back to Buenos Aires. Lindblad can't be more specific about the amount of time we'll have, because our arrival into Ushuaia depends on what sort of crossing we have of the Drake Passage. So I can't really schedule anything in Ushuaia (e.g., with a guide), and am wondering whether folks have suggestions about what to do with that time in the morning. (It doesn't seem like there will be sufficient time to visit Tierra del Fuego Nat'l Park...) On the outbound leg, they are taking us on a catamaran cruise of the Beagle Channel. Any suggestions would be much appreciated; thanks!
dfb Posted January 8, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2013 You can just walk around town if your time is really short. There are a couple of museums in walking distance. Or a lot of chocolate shops! We went to the park at 9:30am and were at the airport at 11:30am. http://antarcticaonleboreal2012.blogspot.com/2012/03/monday-february-27-2012.html Another visit we hired an English-speaking taxi and spent 4 hours doing the park and Martial Glacier chairlift. http://circle-south-america-2008-aboard.blogspot.com/2008/01/day-26-january-29-2008-ushuaia.html It is an interesting little town with very little traffic and you can cover a lot of ground in very little time. HDS Posted January 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2013 We took a flight (about 30 minutes) in a tiny ( pilot plus three passengers) plane from the Ushuaia Aero Club, a five minute taxi ride from the port. We fly similar size aircraft at home and we loved it. Maybe not for the fainthearted. The aero club and the tiny planes are visible from the port. Apart from the souvenir shops with "end of the world" caps and penguin socks (cosy bedsocks) the town has a museum in the old jail not far from the shopping strip. We didn't have time.
