EithneMay Posted January 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2013 I spoke with an AT&T rep, and was told I can unlock my phone and get an international SIM card so I can keep in touch with my very sick friend while on my 14 day cruise in April. I plan to load the phone with lots of $$ in hope that it is cheaper than using my regular cell-phone plan. Plus, I can keep in touch with work. Anyone tried this and had luck??? Gig103 Posted January 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2013 While on the cruise ship your phone is charged the ship rate of over $2/minute, and prepaid phones may not work. I assume the International SIM will be from AT&T? If so the rate won't be too competitive, but then you know it will work where you go instead of having to figure out if every country on your cruise uses the same network and if the SIM will work everywhere you go. EithneMay Posted January 11, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted January 11, 2013 Thanks.... I'm hoping I can use it while in port, with the international rate, not off the ship's service.
3418ahl Posted January 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 11, 2013 We have Verizon. The rate on board is $2.49 per minute, however the rate for texting is only 50 cents per text....something to perhaps consider. If using phone on board ship, you do not need international calling phone, but you do on shore.
EithneMay Posted January 11, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted January 11, 2013 But my phone is a go phone.... Wondering if that makes a difference...
3418ahl Posted January 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 11, 2013 See this: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB66571&cv=820#fbid=-3dKW4CCUU_ I don't think it makes a difference, but you could ask ATT and I am sure they will tell you.
