D3L7 Posted September 12, 2009 #27 Share Posted September 12, 2009 Can't believe I found these posts by accident. Was cleaning out my desk and found 4 Singleworld travelers lists - you know the ones you sign and give your name and info at the welcome cocktail party! Made me curious as to what happend to the company - sorry to see it cratered. I have cruised almost 20 time since 1981 - almost all on the Norway and at least 1/2 through Singleworld. Love it all - met my husband on the Norway in 1986, didn't know it at the time. He was from Texas and I was from Cleveland. Got together a year later, dropped out of touch - back together again and married in '90 - that was a successful Singleworld trip! Loved meeting all the other single people. Went once on my own - thought I was out of my mind - that was a memorable trip. Loved the hosts Dominick, Dawson and Debbie - have forgotten the others. Evcen got to have drinks with Dawson while I was visiting Florida - ran over to the port and looked him up. Sorry to see Singleworld go away - it was a marvelous way for single people to travel and have a ball. Love the Carribean but will be going to Alaska next July. rick0404 Posted January 4, 2010 #28 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I too sailed with the singleworld group years ago and was some of the best vacations i have ever had. gzmo57 Posted January 11, 2010 #29 Share Posted January 11, 2010 I took my first SingleWorld cruise after my divorce in 1991. I booked it three weeks before it sailed (so I could not back out) and it was a southern caribbean out of San Juan on the Carnival Tropicale. The escort was Debbie. In fact, I still keep in touch with some of the people that I met. My second cruise was in 1992 on Monarch of the Seas and the escort was Pat. In 1994, I went on the Norway and the escort was Dominic. I think that was the last SingleWorld Cruise. It's a shame that they are not longer around as I'd like to go on a cruise sometime next year after I finish my Master's but don't know which group to sail with! Any suggestions? Cruisin' Jeff Posted June 23, 2010 #30 Share Posted June 23, 2010 I too enjoyed several cruises with singleworld. One aboard the Carnival Holiday and 3 on the SS Norway. Ahhh, The SS Norway! What a beautiful ship! I had the best time in April of 1993. 5 of the best table mates and we spent most of the trip together! Some of us still keep in touch. Dom O'Carroll was the host. I believe Jamie Massey was the Holiday's host. I also believe Diane Resiniti was aboard one of the Norway's cruises.

Mark Posted June 23, 2010 #32 Share Posted June 23, 2010 Just remembered three more SW escorts that I had...Julie McCormick, Julia Stramm and Beth Grosholtz...all very good and much fun just as Dominick and Jamie were...
mkam2821 Posted June 28, 2010 #33 Share Posted June 28, 2010 Found this thread by accident and thought I'd chime in. I cruised with SW on the Norway back in the mid-70's and had a wonderful trip and have been cruising ever since.I also don't know if I would have taken the trip if it weren't for SAW (though I did enjoy sailing on Windjammer's P;ynesia for my 30th birthday. My husband and I are now planning a Mediterranean cruise for next spring to celebrate our 25th anniversary!
Rare ggo85 Posted June 28, 2010 #34 Share Posted June 28, 2010 I went on the old Norway in 1979 or 1980 through Singleworld. I was in my mid 20's and my memories are of a fantastic time and a fantastic cruise. The Norway was gorgeous at that time. I dont remember any of the escorts, but I do remember meeting so many friendly people and having a blast. - Rhona Same here -- only it was 1985. Norway was big and, it seemed, THE ship to take around the Caribbean. Given the single supplement costs, there was no way I could have cruised w/o Singleworld. I only did it once -- went with friends or family after that until DH came along. Thus, I don't remember the guides. I do remember that it was really about traveling with a bunch of other folks, not trying to get hitched. It's a shame it went OOB but change happens, if not always for the best.

BeagleDogLover Posted July 6, 2010 #37 Share Posted July 6, 2010 I just happened to see this thread and I also have fond memories of Singleworld. I think it was 1986 when I took my first SW cruise on the Norway. I remember getting up very early to reserve deck chairs for my new found lady friends. It was the best time and we spent entire 'at sea' days from morning 'til night soaking up the Sun and our drinks. It was so sad when I heard the SS Norway was converted to a stationary gambling ship. I wonder where she is today. She was a grand old ship in the tradition of a time gone by. The classic Neptune sculture in the grand ballroom (near the bow, if I recall correctly) was superb. I, too, remember Dominic, Julia, Kathy, Beth, Julie and the other guy (Dawson?) They were great hosts and made everone feel welcome and comfortable. One time, Dawson showed me hundreds of photos of some of the female guests he, ahem, escorted. I wonder to this day whether all of his parts are intact. I don't remember how many Singleworld cruises I enjoyed but I really do miss those days. Thanks for the memories.
Mark Posted July 6, 2010 #38 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Beagle Sorry yo have to tell you this...but the Indians chopped up Norway in late 2008 in Alang, India...and she is now being used to make things like razor blades, storm sewer covers, manhole street covers etc...if you do a query on SS Norway Alang, you will see some of the last photos...very depressing...very sad...what a terrible ending to such a fine ship...one of a kind! Mark I am almost sorry you told me that. Somtimes ignorance is bliss. Even when I walked upon her majestic decks, dined in her historic facilities, ate 'better than Carnival' cuisine and enjoyed the artwork and detail, I really did not appreciate the unique history until years later. I did, however, understand that ships of that era were never again to grace the seas. I even influenced my sister, who literally hated cruising, to take a trip on the SS Norway. I am certain that history will remember her fondly.
rick0404 Posted October 6, 2010 #40 Share Posted October 6, 2010 I too traveled with singleworld back in the day. Now that i am single once again, i was hoping that it was still around. I do not remember alot of the names of the hosts, but did keep in touch with some of the people i met on board for a time after the cruise. we always had a great time on the excursions, great memories. Something that I will never forget. Sailed on the NCL a few times and once on Carnival.

George C Posted March 25, 2011 #42 Share Posted March 25, 2011 I know I am repling to a very old post, but I used to love single world they had the best shore excursions, also remember Dominick a very funny guy who liked to drink. My 1st 15 or so cruises were with them starting in 1977 on the Rotterdam and going on to Soverign of the Seas where we got engaged and got engament ring in St Thomas in 1991. One of the funny things was that one one cruise there were a couple traveling together named Joeseph and Mary who said they were brother and sister but were married, Joeseph loved to hang out after Mary went to sleep, they booked the cruise because singleworld had the best rate. Try Ultimate Singles Travel. They're new, but have several singles trips, including cruises listed on their website. I found them through a Google search. They look pretty promising, judging by the website. :D
COMBOY Posted May 4, 2012 #45 Share Posted May 4, 2012 This is an interesting thread. I booked a cruise on RCCL Sovereign of the Seas way back in 1989 fairly last minute. This is when RCCL used to offer cabin shares. I got lucky and ended up getting the cabin all to myself. Anyway..the first night at dinner I got seated at a large table with two large families. It was so awkward and I knew this wasn't the right table for me. How I got seated with two families as a solo cruiser I'll never know. I asked the Maitre'd to switch my table and he said no problem. He had a table of single diners. Perfect. The table was with a group from Singlesworld and the host, Julie, sat at my table. She was so nice and invited me to join their group for cocktails, etc. I was surprised since I hadn't booked with Singlesworld. However, she politely reminded me (numerous times) that she didn't make a whole a lot of money at Singleworld and depended upon tips at the end of the cruise. OK...I understood. She was so helpful and nice and I met a lot of nice folks in the Singlesworld group that it was worth the extra tips. I never did another Singlesworld cruise again, but it still is a very memorable experience. Julie made it very special.
Tory 1983 Posted June 29, 2012 #46 Share Posted June 29, 2012 Hi everyone! I was so happy to find this discussion forum. I took my first and only Singleworld cruise in October of 1992 on the Carnival Fantasy. It departed from Miami and visited Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas. I was young, only 24 at the time, and had an absolute blast! It was the farthest I had ever been from home up to that time. The people in my group were wonderful! Our tour guides were a friendly and wonderful mother-and-son team named Beth and Trevor Grosholtz (sp?). About 5-6 years later, after Singleworld had gone out of business, I received a mailing from Beth and Trevor with information on their new business, Majestic Sun Tours. They had taken the Singleworld concept and were implementing it to run their own singles tours. Whether or not Majestic Sun still exists, I don't know. I haven't heard from them since. Beth and Trevor were very nice people and reached out to me, and young single traveler on her own. I hope I can find them again someday.
Annieofthesea Posted June 13, 2013 #47 Share Posted June 13, 2013 I can't believe I stumbled on to this thread. I realize its not the most current, but I had to respond. I used to work at Singleworld dba Gramercy Travel. I was young and was hired as a biller. This was in the late 70's, and very early 80's. I left there in the early 80's so the only escort I really got to meet was named Randy Russell. He had been with the company for awhile and was getting married so he left the ship to work in the travel agency office. It was quite busy back then and I recall taking my first trip on the Rotterdam out of NY. I just recently learned that it no longer existed, and I found out that the original owner, Mr. Richard Lowenstein, passed away in 2010. That was sad to hear...:(
knarf51 Posted January 3, 2014 #48 Share Posted January 3, 2014 My cruises with Singleworld still remain some of the absolute best vacations of my life. I always cruised on the SS Norway back in the mid 80's (seems like a lifetime ago). It was ALWAYS 7 days of meeting wonderful people, fun, and partying. The Singleworld host we always had was Dawson Wallace, who I considered not only the host but also a great friend. I was extremely saddened to learn of Dawson's passing in September of 2013. Another chapter of my life laid to rest. I don't like this getting older crap.
