Cell phone service in South Pacific?

Is there good cell phone coverage on the islands? I have Verizon and they said I have to rent an International phone for $4.99 and then calls are $2.29 min.:eek: texts are .50

Is there reliable cell service there or am I better off just using a calling card?

Service is good as long as your in an area of the island that has population. The price is what it is, expensive no matter what with the exception of Skype which does work from your internet connection on the ship where the going rate is 25 cents - 50 cents per minute.
