zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2005 There are a number of hotels, garages, etc. within walking distance of the cruise ship terminals in New Orleans. Rather disturbing to me was I noticed a number of Pedestrian Prohibited signs when walking around the area Memorial Day weekend. Perhaps I had just never noticed or perhaps just ignored or maybe they really are new. But here are some walking pictures. Parked the car near Praline Connection Gospel and Blues Hall: http://www.pralineconnection.com/ Across the street is Marriott Springhill Suites: http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MSYSH Walking along South Peters towards Mariott Courtyard and Embassy Suites. In this block is Howlin Wolf... http://www.howlin-wolf.com/default.pl Next corner is Marriott Courtyard and Embassy Suites: http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MSYCN http://www.embassyneworleans.com/
zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 Author #2 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Ok, now at South Peters and Julia. Now about going to head down Julia Street towards the river. But pause to take a picture of the Rio Mar sign on the same corner... http://www.riomarseafood.com/ Ahead on the left is Mulate's restaurant, Riverwalk Mall, and the cruise ships! Now at Julia and Convention Center Blvd and the entrance to Mulate's http://www.mulates.com/
zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted June 5, 2005 The Cajun Market across the street: Hilton Riverside and Internation Trade Mart (or whatever the heck it is called these days: http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=MSYNHHH Have now crossed Convention Center Blvd (@Julia) and looking towards the Hilton still. Can you see why this is called the Whale Parking lot? Riverwalk dead ahead: http://www.riverwalkmarketplace.com/ Julia Street does go all the way through:
zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Moving on down... Can see the top of the Conquest: And down that road is how I normally walk to the Conquest. If your ship is at berth two, you are pretty much there at this point. http://pstr-m03.ygpweb.aol.com/data/019/7C/97/38/5A/FOchXV6JUqs6OJiH+bWcJUwyftUYlQJu0300.jpg' alt='FOchXV6JUqs6OJiH+bWcJUwyftUYlQJu0300.jpg'>

zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Again, I don't see ANY issues walking to Berth 2 - it is Berth 1 that may be more of a challenge these days. And you can still walk to Berth 1...
zydecocruiser Posted June 5, 2005 Author #8 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Walking from Holiday Inn Select Convention Center is about the same as from Embassy Suites: http://holiday-inn-select-new-orleans-convention-center.com/ and Holiday Inn (currently anyway) has a park and cruise deal with parking at Fulton Street garage next door. http://www.cruiseparkingneworleans.com/ If you rent a car from Hertz at the airport, you can also drop it off at this Hertz location wih no drop off fee. nybumpkin Posted June 6, 2005 #13 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Thanks for posting! Liked being able to see where our balcony on Conquest is - and what there is around the pier! (BTW, Zydeco - I bought prescription goggles on ebay:) )
selucrey Posted June 6, 2005 #14 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Zydeco.. I walked the area in your pics today and it seemed to me that the best place to get off for those taking the streetcars to the pier would be the Julia Street stop. You can take the escalator up to the Riverwalk and go out the back door to the walkway. Not that bad of a walk. I was with Zonemasconi from these boards and he weighs around 400 lbs.:D

Instead of the escalator, there is an elevator behind at Riverwalk.
zydecocruiser Posted June 6, 2005 Author #16 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Alternate suggestion: if attempting riverfront streecar - julia street stop Walk back that-a-way a short bit: You can take the escalators up or I think there is an elevator around here:
zydecocruiser Posted June 6, 2005 Author #17 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Though the glass doors into Riverwalk mall. Ignore the food court (if you can) Out the back glass doors to the walkway: Give an evil grin to the peasants who just sit there watching and waiting for the ships to depart. And you can walk along the elevated walkway: From there, you can skip to the end(ish) of this thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=185091
Zeno Posted June 6, 2005 #18 Share Posted June 6, 2005 WOW ! Thx so much for all these great pictures and descriptions. We may be cruising from New Orleans next year and I am trying to find out some of the logistics.
selucrey Posted June 6, 2005 #19 Share Posted June 6, 2005 There is an elevator but it was out-of-order yesterday. There is some very good food available at the Food Court. Sort of a "Fast food" atmosphere but good and varied.
sea_u_onboard Posted June 7, 2005 #20 Share Posted June 7, 2005 QUESTION - Is it possible to see the ship from the Holiday Inn Convention Center Blvd? Just wondering if we should try and get rooms on that side of the hotel.

zydecocruiser Posted June 7, 2005 Author #22 Share Posted June 7, 2005 QUESTION - Is it possible to see the ship from the Holiday Inn Convention Center Blvd? Just wondering if we should try and get rooms on that side of the hotel. Maybe from the upper floors you might be able to see some of the upper decks. You have to look over the Convention Center and the Cruise Terminal Bldg. Think most (all?) of the ship won't be directly opposite of the hotel. Dunno. samdham Posted June 24, 2005 #24 Share Posted June 24, 2005 Could you estimate how far it is from the Holiday Inn to the pier? Is it practical to walk with a rolling bag or two? Or would we be better off getting a cab to go to the pier?

Or would we be better off getting a cab to go to the pier? I assume you are referring to the Holiday Inn Select Convention Center. I'd estimate about 3 1/2 blocks. Very practical as far as I'm concerned. I've walked that distance + a cruise ship and a half farther to get to the Conquest before. I'm on the Nov 6 Sun sailing and is what I plan on doing. I'll have a huge suitcase + garment bag + laptop bag + probably one more (I've downsized!), but the suitcase rolls easily. If you see me post after that you'll know I survived!
