Auckland SkyTower

Yes it is within walking distance. Might take you about 15 minutes. Alternatively there is a bus that you can get on near the port that will drop you near a cross street that the tower is on. The bus costs about 50cents ( not a misprint - 50 cents )

I don't know the bus number or name but it just did a circuit around the inner city.

Hope that helps.

Bus leaves from near the cruise terminal ( about a 300 metre walk) on or near the bottom of Queen street.

You can use route 005 (Monday to Friday only caught on Custom House west rd) or 030 (caught on Queen st near cnr of Quay st). But really although up a slight hill would be no more than 15-20 minute walk from pier (at most).

Hill is slight, but just keeps going up and up. In case of hot weather, take the Link bus (as described above) and then after the Sky Tower have a leisurely walk back to port down hill.

Go through Queen Street for some shopping if wanted. Just before you get back to the ship walk left to the area with the Maritime Museum and there are several cafe's and restaurants with terraces and a marina.

It is a nice place to sit for a bit and do some people and seagul watching.:)

We will be staying in Auckland 2 nights in January, 2015, before leaving on a cruise. Could anyone recommend a moderately-priced hotel within walking distance of the cruise terminal? We are not interested in a pricey one.

Hi Fishcreek

We are sailing on Solstice ex Auckland in December.

Quite a few on our Roll Call are staying at the Waldorf Celestion. This is an apartment hotel and suits many because two bedroom suites are available for about A$160/night (can vary)

Closest hotel to where the cruise ships dock is the Copthorne. We were going to stay there, but they didn't have the room configuration we wanted for our family. They also have some good rates and are in a great position right across Quay St from Princes Wharf. Some say its getting a bit tired, but from my research it is very good value. You should be able to get a room there for two people in January 2015 for about AU$135 per night

cheers

We recently checked out and stayed at the Quay West Suites Hotel in Albert Street which we think is really suitable for cruisers. This is an apartment hotel just a block up from the water front of Princess Wharf. Would be about a 5 minute walk from ship.

We found the price reasonable for that location, considering we had a lounge with kitchen, seperate bedroom, bathroom with bath and shower, also a laundry with washing and drying, plus a very large balcony (ask for harbour view) on the 17th floor.

Besides a backpackers you will not find any cheap accommodation in that location. The most moderate price would most likely be the Copthorne.

Although you can pay just to go to the observation deck of the tower the better deal is to have lunch in the revolving restaurant. You can then go up to the observation deck at no extra cost. The food was excellent on our visit.

Yes it is walking distance up Queen Street then turn right onto Victoria Street. Orbit (revolving restaurant) nice for lunch but there are several alternatives. Often if you pay for lunch it includes entry up to the observation deck which is probably a better option if you are going to go up anyway. There are several new restaurants that have recently opened up just across from Sky City (next to the convention centre) - my favourite is The Grill or Depot Eatry if you like Oysters.
