MrPete Posted February 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 7, 2013 (edited) I was looking through some old pix, and came across one the "new" DW took of me on our first stop on the Jubilee, in a silly straw hat and short shorts. She was our first, way back in 1988, and now timing with our 25th anniversary. Barely new, she was just a selection we made out of a Carnival brochure. We were fortunate to have sailed her 2 more times, and almost a third when she did a two weeker through the Panama Canal, but that Noriega guy made me a bit nervous at the time. We got to see her in the distance just before she became a P&O ship, and I understand she has since moved on to bigger and better things. It was kinda sad seeing her sail into the sunset. Oh yeah. And that picture. dork Edited February 7, 2013 by MrPete

cruisetexas Posted February 7, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 7, 2013 Our first cruise was on the Jubilee in 2002 with my 80 year old Mother and 76 year old Aunt. Very fond memories, and got us hooked! She was small, but our 2nd cruise was on the Elation and loved that class.....so easy to navigate. You're right, bigger isn't always better! Thanks for the memory jog! I think my husband had that same outfit!
neosmom Posted February 7, 2013 #9 Share Posted February 7, 2013 My first cruise was on the Jubilee, as well. My boyfriend (now husband) surprised me with the cruise. He'd been on several cruises, but I was so nervous! Was hooked after that great little ship!

Fun times then, but much better now. ~Artie Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk I had no clue the Jubilee was on the West Coast and sailed Mexican Riviera cruises! Look at that..., learn something new everyday.Would love to have sailed an older ship. I was still a kid back then. Didn't learn about cruising until 2009. PunkinsDad Posted February 7, 2013 #16 Share Posted February 7, 2013 Jubilee was the ship that started it all for us. My DW and I took our first cruise on her, the date, September 13, 2001. That's right ladies and gentlemen, only 2 days after the 9/11 attacks. My wife had received the cruise as a hiring bonus (those were the days!!!) from the University of Louisville Hospital. (We lived in our native Kentucky at that time). For one one reason or another (the biggest being the birth of our DD) we had postponed the cruise a few times, but the time came when we had to either take the cruise, or lose it. So we booked for 9/13/2001 on the Jubilee out of Tampa. We were all set, kids going to grandparents, vacation time scheduled, airfare paid for, bags packed. We were going to fly in a day early and spend the day in Clearwater before boarding our ship. On the 11th, I was in my office, pretending to work. Actually I was daydreaming about the upcoming vacation. My DW was preparing by getting a manicure and running last minute errands. She was in the nail salon, when the news broke about the first plane striking the World Trade Center. She immediately called me to tell me what had happened. I went to the office next door where there was a TV, just in time to see the second plane strike the other tower. I knew immediately that this was no accident. I called DW back and told her to take the car, and have the oil changed, tires rotated and the belts and hoses checked. I was certain even at that point that flying to Tampa was not going to be an option. Many friends and family expressed alarm and concern that we were still going on our cruise, given what had happened. I understood their fears, but told them all that I was not about to change my plans just because some sick, evil people were trying to make me afraid. That’s what they wanted, I felt that to change my plans would be another small victory for them. So we set off, in the car, for Tampa. A mere 14 hours away. At this point, no one at Carnival could confirm for certain if the ship would actually sail as scheduled. We called every hour. Needless to say, the ship did sail as scheduled. I was told by one of the crew (cruise director??) that even with the restrictions on airline travel, over 90% of those who were booked on that cruise actually showed up. The couple behind us in line at check-in had driven from New Jersey, and arrived in Tampa at 9:00 that morning. The cruise itself was very good; we had a wonderful time, even though we missed our scheduled stop in Key West due to a Tropical Storm in the Gulf. (Our first and only missed port……so far). I was a bit concerned that the stress and worry about the tragic events that had just taken place would make the mood onboard a somber one, but that was far from the case. It did my heart good to see everyone enjoying themselves. That cruise started our addiction, but our family vacations for the next several years consisted mainly of trips to WDW, which we also love. In 2004 we moved to the Alabama Gulf Coast, and in 2007 we started cruising again, that cruise was on Jubilee’s sister ship, the Holiday. We were joined by my MIL and FIL and we’ve been cruising as a group ever since. My FIL and I will become Platnium cruisers on our next sailing, 3/24 Carnival Glory from Miami. DW and MIL have taken a couple of "girls cruises" and reached Platnium a few cruises ago. Carnival has changed a lot since 2001, some changes good, some not so good, but the ting that keeps bringing us back (besides the fact that we just love being on the ocean and seeing new places) is the wonderful Carnival staff and crew. We have met so many wonderful crewmembers over the years, and have made many great memories.
NorthTexasCruisers Posted February 7, 2013 #17 Share Posted February 7, 2013 We sailed on the Jubilee in July of 2003. It was our first. We sailed with my 2 sisters, 18 and 21 at the time. Driving to the port and seeing the ship for the first time we couldn't believe how big it was!! We have since been on the Ecstasy, Elation, Triumph, Spirit, Conquest, a couple of RCL ships and a HAL. We still love the smaller ships the best. There are several reasons that the Jubilee is our favorite ship so far. The biggest being, that after struggling with infertility for many years and having a November adoption scheduled, we came home from that cruise pregnant!!! We even considered naming our son Jubilee. Very briefly. So we had a daughter born in November and a son born the following April. We adopted another daughter the following February. Zero to three kids in 15 months. Our cruising was slowed down for a couple of years, but we were back at it by 2006. Our first cruise with the kids is in June.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It truly was a wonderful cruise! I neglected to mention that what empty cabins there were on the ship were filled in Cozumel with U.S. Citizens who were stranded there by the ban on air-travel. Those poor folks were very glad to be going home!!
Clarabella_Baby Posted February 7, 2013 #21 Share Posted February 7, 2013 So many first times on the Jubilee!! Mine too! Back in 1997. It's what got me hooked. Although I haven't been a faithful cruiser as I have been busy with career and having babies and such...but now I'm going to make a commitment to cruise as much as I can. With my kids now too as they are older. Thank you Jubilee!!!

goofycruiser Posted February 7, 2013 #23 Share Posted February 7, 2013 We sailed on the Jubilee in 1999. It was our third Carnival cruise and was for 11 days. The ship didn't feel small but in comparison to the larger ships of today, she was tiny. We had a great time. We sailed on the Celebration in 2005, Jubilee's sister ship. Now the Fantasy class is considered small. I don't know how much bigger they can build a ship. We are taking the Miracle through the Panama Canal next month. The bigger ships can't fit. deeceedub Posted February 7, 2013 #25 Share Posted February 7, 2013 We sailed Jubilee in the summer of 2003. It was our second cruise and our son's first- a high school graduation trip. Several families with kids from his graduating class went along with us. We had a great time. Jubilee was small but we enjoyed every minute. Since then, we've sailed twice on Conquest and are booked for Glory this July. I wonder if we will ever look back at Conquest-class and think that those ships were small
