Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

They did say all onboard purchases would be refunded other than gift shops and casinos (both of which make sense - except duty free purchases that hadn't been delivered might need to be credited back). Minibars would count, once they can get to cabins. Contents would be warm of course.

I was just wondering since Carnival allowed the passengers on the Splendor to raid the mini bar. This would not affect the S&S accounts.

I believe only the suite cabins have mini bars.

This was an accident and could have happened on any cruise liner.

 

According to several reviews from this ship over the last 45 days, the ship was regularly late, could not come close to its top speed, and required a higher degree of maintenance than normal while at port. Passengers had been told that due to propulsion problems, they had to cancel ports of call.

 

I wouldn't necessarily call this an "accident". Carnival knew this ship had problems and refused to do anything about it.

Why would the USCG have to board the ship???

 

Why wouldn't they ? You don't think they might be able to help, they might have supply's or EQ that might be helpful ?

Those blue lounge chairs on deck are ok for a couple of hours, but I cant imagine spending the night on one.

 

I feel very bad for the folks on board, but I am also very glad that no one was injured or worse.

 

I wish all aboard a safe trip home.

Very generous? Isn't this the minimum that Carnival should do? I mean people on the current cruise are going to miss flights and have unplanned time away from work - which will cost them either more vacation time or lost wages. I applaud Carnival for doing exactly what it should be doing. Quite frankly, it should be extending the same offer to those in transit for the upcoming cruise that will not be departing on time, if it departs at all. I'm sorry, I would not describe the compensation as "very generous".

 

 

I completely agree with you. You would think some of these people are the PR for Carnival when saying they are being "very generous". They are doing exactly what they should be doing, not as though they are going above and beyond.

You can see a door open where tenders would drop off supplies, seas are negligible, bright sunny day, even looks like a wisp of smoke comng from the stack. I imagine people on the top deck are taking pictures of the USCG ship.

Assuming the cutter is on site, its common procedure to put officers on board the ship being rescued to coordinate communications and efforts between the bridge crews of both ships. Additional personnel may also be brought on board to assist with practical operations, medical services, and technical assistance.

Only If the Captain of the Triumph has requested their assistance will they board. Or if they deem it necessary they can request to board a ship

 

The 210 is there just in case and to escort the Triumph to safety

No they don't. Soon enough passengers will be back on shore and I have no doubt there will be confirmation that some toilets were quickly put back in service. You know there will be an army of reporters waiting to meet passengers when they return. And almost as many lawyers handing out business cards reading Call Me!

 

Believe what you want - I am sure once these poor folks get back to shore, YouTube will be filled with videos of people defecating in red bags.

The USCG has every right to board the ship for any reason or no reason at all.

 

Some reasons would be to assure that the fire is out and to assist in any damage assessments and preliminary investigation, passenger evaluations, etc.

The smoke indicates that at least one generator is operating. That is good. I wouldn't be surprised if the door is also open for cooling. While all of the guests are up on deck, I'm sure the crew is still toiling away in some pretty miserable conditions down on the lower decks. Not fun for anyone.

There's no reason to think that both parties would be right. First of all, we know when the message was received, but not when it was sent. I've had texts get delayed before, and that wasn't when an extra 4,000 people were trying to send messages to family back home.

 

And when the toilets were working, how did they communicate this? With an intercom system that runs on power? If he was at the other end of the ship from the working toilets, I imagine it would take a while to get the message across. And considering the open decks aren't nearly large enough for that many people, it's probably not easy to get to the other end of the ship and check.

 

As for Carnival lying, why would they? This is information that would be extremely easy for passengers to call them out on once they got off the ship. No way are the PR people dumb enough to issue a blatant lie like that. The resulting effect would be much worse for them once everyone got off the ship and told the truth, rather than just saying they're still not working right now.

 

It's entirely plausible for everyone to be right at the moment.

The intercom is more than likely working with the use of the emergency generators. The intercom was being used on the Splendor during the similar situation.

As for delays in texts contributing to misunderstandings about what's happening on the Triumph...the one time I was in the Mall of America, several friends texted me that they were at our rendez-vous point early and I should come meet them. I got the texts 18 hours later!

 

So I would think it's certainly possible that texts from the Triumph are being delayed, and if so, someone's text that no toilets are working would not necessarily conflict with the Carnival/USCG-released information that some are now working.

I wonder how I would react? I imagine as long as I could get back in the cabin I'd be OK .. we book balconies - so at least it might not get TOO hot. It didn't sound as though they were FORCED to spend the night outside - but rather it was more comfortable to be out on deck.

 

There is so much speculation on the thread ... it's good to read from folks who have family/friends that they've heard from ... tho' even then I imagine that the messages are mixed, depending on what the passengers are hearing/experiencing.

 

I think the talk of lawsuits, etc should be for those who have experienced it - and that only after the investigation is complete..

 

Sounds like Carnival is doing all they can with the situation..

No, it certainly does not. :eek: That's not what I call a relaxing vacation! The weather looks very hot and uncomfortable without AC. Overcast would've been better. But at least there should be some sea breeze.
