What to do on sea days?

Just heard from my travel agent that our Oct. 8, 2005 cruise on the Glory has dropped the Progresso port. Bummer! I was looking forward to going to the Mayan Pyramid. Oh well, guess we will have three full sea days. Do any of you wonderful people have suggestions for what to do while at sea? I usually prefer getting off the ship at the ports and exploring. I've always only used the at sea days to "recoup" from the busy port days.

Do you think that this extra sea day will cause my on-board ship account to be hit hard?

There will be a lot of activities planned for sea days. Take in those that interest you. Otherwise, I like to nap, people watch, read, have a few drinks, eat, maybe take in a movie or two, browse the onboard shops and get to know my fellow cruisers.

We were on the Glory last year and went to Chichen Itza at the Progreso port. I hate that you will miss the experience. It was the highlight of our cruise as far as we were concerned. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I was just talking to a Carnival PVP today about sea days. I told him I didn't care for a 7 day cruise that had 3 sea days. He said Carnival did a survey and 70% of the respondents preferred more days at sea than at a port of call. What that will eventually translate into, if anything, I don't know. I don't mind a 7 day cruise with a couple of days at sea but if I wanted all that "at sea" time, I'd take a cruise to nowhere or a transatlantic voyage.

Find a nice quiet place (your balcony?), a good book, cold drink, read till you are tired and then take a nap while the sea rocks you like a baby. I never nap at home but nap every sea day when we are on a cruise.

Sometimes the best vacation is when you simply rest peacefully, eat at leisure, and let the staff pamper you. :)

This is what I am talking about!!!!!!! Relax your on vacation!!!!!! Do Nothing be a couch potato or Deck chair potato hehehehe!!!!! Oh yea drink heavy the night before give you a reason to sit around and do nothing, then you wont feel gulity about doing nothing... I know this can sometimes be an issue!!!!:)

For sure your account will be hit hard. We were on the Valor 5/22 and Thursday night I checked my sign and sail account and was suprised how little we had spent. Then after 2 hot sea days it had doubled. But we enjoyed every dollar.

It's a good day to sleep in, recharge and get ready for the next early excursion at the next port.

Usually also get a lot of pics of the ship on a sea day. maybe an afternoon nap and just relax by the pool...

The cruise out of NY on the Legend has only 3 port days and 4+ full sea days and we really enjoyed it. Ususally I come back from a cruise exhausted with trying to 'fill' the ports with sightseeing and excursions, and end up spending lots on these activities. I bring a few books and several 'trashy' magazines (which I only read on vacations- a splurge, and trade with others). The pool lounge chairs fill quickly in the morning but later in the day everybody spreads out and chairs become available (plus with the towel charge, people are diligent about taking them with them). On this cruise we came home well rested, which was great after our usual (as most people) daily 'beat-the-clock' lifestyle.

I also took a nap in the afternoon most sea days (my husband read on the balcony or up on deck) so I could stay up later and enjoy the shows, lounges, piano bar, karaoke, etc. all free !! I would drink clubsoda, in the evening, to fill in between drinks which saved money ($1.50 or $2 per 12 oz can and ask for 2 glasses w ice and lemon) and prevented the 'dreadly' hangover potential.

Scan the daily caper for (free) activities which are plenty; my son and GF (mid 20's) even went to the swing-dance lessons and had a ball. Go to the art auction (interesting and no need to buy), a movie, the gym (yes, it's fun and not all classes have fee's), a spa presentation (don't buy anything), napkin towel folding, the pool games are a lot of fun to watch, trivia games, demo's of all sorts, window shopping, strolling inside and out, and people watching (great pastime -fun at all events), always something to do ..... BTW, they had coffee, tea, ice tea and lemonade free all day on the lido ...

Have fun and relax, too .... :D

Sea days are my favorite! I am always looking for a cruise that has the most sea days. It is called CRUISING for a reason!!! NOT PORTING!!! I chill out in a chair by the pool and watch the clouds and sea go by!!! I'd pay double for a cruise w/5 days at sea and 1day@private island in the Caribb.

Thanks everyone. There are a lot of great suggestions here! I've been thinking about this since I posted and something occurred to me. I have always thought that the day passes so quickly while on an excursion and sea days seem to last longer. With an extra sea day perhaps the cruise will seem to last longer. Am I crazy? The other ports (that we will be stopping at) are Key West, Belize, and Cozumel. I live in Florida and have been to the keys dozens of times. I think that I've been to Cozumel two or three times and although the water is beautiful there, I just wasn't all that impressed with this port. I've never been to Belize, so I'm really looking forward to visiting here. Another thing to take into consideration is that this sailing is happening at the end of the hurricane season ( sometimes the busiest storm time ). I may end up doing the eastern itinery because of a storm in the western caribbean! I'm sure of only one thing, I will have an absolutely wonderful time!
