ScottsSweetie Posted February 15, 2013 #2 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Well that just gives me a warm fuzzy, because I just know that now, with Congress involved, nothing can go wrong!
scottamemnon Posted February 15, 2013 #3 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Thankfully Congress cannot get anything passed lately. They could really do no good in such a situation. The only think I could see potentially coming out of this which would be positive would potentially be an increase of funding to the USCG to help them increase inspections. tozer Posted February 15, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 15, 2013 I think I have the same feeling. You know if Congress gets involved it's going to be taken care of immediately!!!!!!!! It was an accident!!!!!!!!! It was preventable. Not a random act of God Carnival had no control over. It is up to Carnival to prevent fires aboard their own ships. Congress has every right to look into this matter and should.
prophet0621 Posted February 15, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Congress is worthless and has more important things they should be doing but are ignoring. They need to stay out of it but of course they won't.
MissMeggieMurphy Posted February 15, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 15, 2013 So a US Senator, a Rockefeller no less, has absolutely nothing better to do during the week than listen to innuendo and unsubstantiated reports about a cruise ship and then send off a letter to an Admirable who has plenty to do outside of this little witch hunt and demand financial answers that will take months to compile. Other than passing over some water and escorting the ship, both of which the CG does on a regular bases, what expenses would the CG have had? And wasn't the splendor escorted by navy not CG? Boy I dislike pompous arsed politicians with an agenda. Obviously the cruise line industry didn't fill his re-election coffers.
emelvee Posted February 15, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Unrelated to the article, but I've always liked Jamie Dupree. Was one of my favorite parts of Neal Boortz's radio show; now he's on with Herman Cain.

ilovetexas Posted February 15, 2013 #11 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Congress needs to shut up and get back to work. They have no business investigating steroid using baseball players or cruise ship disasters. After they've minded their own business, they can mind other people's business. MissMeggieMurphy Posted February 15, 2013 #12 Share Posted February 15, 2013 Actually I am wondering about the response to this incident. Heaven forbid this happened in the Pacific Ocean. There should be a response by the cruise line- to cancel or empty another vessel and send that vessel to pick up the stranded passengers. or they should have chartered some boats to come and retrieve the passengers- make hotel and travel arrangements for all of the passengers. They should not have lingered in the water for four days- since they were close to Mexican ports and to US ports. This was obviously a cost saving measure on the part of Carnival and they didn't give a crap about the passengers. I would not want to be one of the passengers on Triumph when they begin sailing again and I suspect that most people have cancelled cruises on Triumph. This really makes Carnival look bad and their stingy-ness is going to bite them in the you know what. I am in a complete state of shock that with a gazillion posts in a million threads on the subject of ship to ship transfer that this subject is still being brought up. And I just estimated that getting a passenger out of a lifeboat, across a gangway and into the rescue ship would take, say 30 seconds per pax. That's about 33 hours for the 4000 souls that were aboard the Triumph.

Yes, put out even more people, then risk doing a ship to ship transfer for 4000 people. Very safe. or they should have chartered some boats to come and retrieve the passengers- make hotel and travel arrangements for all of the passengers. Again, ship to ship transfers mid-ocean - very safe. Sure. I guess you missed where they did make hotel and travel arrangements for the passengers. Selective hearing? They should not have lingered in the water for four days- since they were close to Mexican ports and to US ports. They should have made everyone swim since they were so close. Lazy bastard passengers. This was obviously a cost saving measure on the part of Carnival and they didn't give a crap about the passengers. Too risky, when somebody falls & get smashed by the the ships? I dont think so! That insurance risk alone makes it a bad idea!

sjn911 Posted February 15, 2013 #19 Share Posted February 15, 2013 The fact that Congress is watching and asking questions can not hurt...no matter how cynical we all are with government...I like light shining on this subject in a timely fashion and all involved and inquiry...inquiry pushes for answers of what really is going on..then passengers can give pressure informed. Cruise lines have lots of offshore out of country loopholes..but we still pay the bill and things can get safer for everyone. This whole thing is a sad blessing in disguise in a longer line of closely intervalled issues.
scottamemnon Posted February 15, 2013 #20 Share Posted February 15, 2013 I would think Congress should have enough to keep them busy.....deficit, unemployment.....etc. Geez! Well they all want to make sure that the cruise ships are safe enough for them and their security details for the multiple weeks of vacation they get each year. For some of them they may need to take extra cruises, paid for by the citizens of the US, for "research purposes".
ilovetexas Posted February 15, 2013 #21 Share Posted February 15, 2013 The BEST part is that the senator's letter was dated 2/14; did he just awaken out of a coma that day and realize what we all knew for the previous FOUR days? Also, he's asking when they will get the final Coast Guard report on the Splendor investigation. THAT WAS OVER TWO YEARS AGO. Just worried about it now, are you Senator? Since you're retiring, you want to go out with a bang? In the letter, he's asking the Coast Guard if they can ask to be reimbursed by Carnival for investigation costs. GOOD GRIEF SENATOR, don't you have a staff that can look up information like that for you????
Blurgh Posted February 15, 2013 #22 Share Posted February 15, 2013 LOL, the congress is a bunch of inept goofballs, but if you don't think the government should be looking at this, you're goofier than they are. The standards here, for some people, are so low it's amazing. It's like this is perfectly okay. But if you were stuck on a stinky plane that didn't have a gate for 4-5 hours, it would be the end of the world. Well, who tries to keep that from happening?
