Surrendering Passports

On my previous two cruises, we sailed with birth certificates as ID. We now have passports. Do we surrender those at checkin?

We have only had to surrender passports one time - on the Crystal Symphony. And I don't know why. It was a 3-day "cruise to nowhere" - no port stops. They were returned the last night. We have always cruised on Princess and have never had to do this. Maybe each cruise line has their own rules.
