Skagway - to the Summit

:confused: Is this best to do by rail or bus? It seems that the bus makes several stops for pictures, etc. I'd appreciate some thoughts on this.

Do yourself a favor and rent a car from Avis in Skagway, then get Murray's mile by mile guide. We just did that last week and it couldn't have been better. You make your own stops for pictures and viewing whenever and wherever you want. Go all the way out to Emerald Lake then come back...you won't regret it. Take lots of film or a large memory card!

Can you tell me what the approximate driving time is for a round trip from Skagway to Emerald Lake. Thanks!

Driving time will obviously depend on how many times you stop. We spent about two hours (with multiple stops) driving up to Emerald Lake, ate soup at Cinnamon Cache, spent about 30 minutes in Carcross, then drove back, making more stops. We checked out the car at 9:00 and returned it at 3:00.

We did the trip where you take the train up and a motorcoach down. We really liked that -- riding on the train was a lot of fun, and you had great views. And the narration was interesting because we learned a lot. But round-trip would have been a bit much. The motorcoach on the way down stopped a few times for pictures and worked out well.

Having done both several times, the train is superior for scenery, engineering and history. If of interest it's the better choice. The rail/bus combo tours are a great option, IF YOU do the longer tours that go up into the Yukon. Only you can decide what your priority is?? If interested in going on your own, reserve that car NOW, Avis is the only major rental. I suggest you go 150 miles round trip with a turn around at Emerald Lake, factor in about 5 hours. This route offers a very cheap sled dog interaction if desired at Caribou Crossing, $10 US without a cart ride, $52ca with.
