Anyone stayed at Marriott or Hampton? Any other recommendation in the surrounding keys?

I've stayed at the Hampton Inn in Key Largo and it ain't your typical Hampton Inn. Below is a link to my Trip Advisor review...

We stayed at the Key Largo Bay Marriott Beach Resort and the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel back in August as part of a family scuba diving vacation.

The Key Largo property was nice. The hotel is on the side of the island that faces the bay rather than the ocean. The views are pretty. It has a small beach, fine swimming pool, and there is a dive shop to take you out to snorkel or dive. Service was excellent. Rooms were great although we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite so my opinion is probably favorably swayed here.

There is a Courtyard 3-4 miles further south on the Overseas Highway on Key Largo. We didn't stay there but parked next to it many times as there were several small outdoor kiosks for different vendors (sailing, diving, fishing, etc) which is convenient.

But beware, if you are planning to do a pre-cruise stay in Key Largo, it is quite a haul to get there....

All 23 of The Pelican's clean and quiet cottages are the perfect place for relaxing and enjoying all that the Florida Keys has to offer. From experiencing the unique, laid-back atmosphere, to trying your hand at world-class sportfishing, diving and snorkeling, you are sure to find an activity that suits your tastes. And if that sounds too active, head to our bayfront beach, where you can enjoy glorious sunsets, gentle breezes, a nap in a hammock or watch manatees and dolphins and play.

Sunset Cove Beach Resort, in sunny Key Largo, offers a true island atmosphere with beautiful private beach sunsets. Affordable accommodations range from cottages to waterfront suites

just to mention two ... these are on the Gulf side which means they are actually on the water . . .
