Hurtigruten ship Kong Harald runs aground

Norwegian operator Hurtigruten has released a statement confirming that its ship, Kong Harald, has hit an underground rock just outside Trollfjord at 11:30pm on Monday.

All 258 passengers were evacuated safely and there were no casualties.

The firm has cancelled its 4-12 March cruise from Stokmarknes to Bergen and all passengers have been flown home.

The statement from Hurtigruten reads:

“At 23.30 on Monday 4 March, Hurtigruten’s ship MS Kong Harald hit an underground rock and was grounded outside Trollfjord. She took in water. The ship had to wait for the tide to rise to be taken off the rock and she then sailed directly to Svolvaer. There were 258 passengers on board, 16 of whom were from the UK. The situation on board was calm and all guests have now disembarked. Hurtigruten has cancelled the sailing Stokmarknes – Kirkenes – Bergen from 4.3.13 – 12.3.13 and all guests will be flown home today. MS Kong Harald will sail to the shipyard in Fiskarstrand for repairs.”
