Labadee art work

Recommended Posts

We were in Labadee a couple weeks ago. I bought a canvas picture that was priced for $25.00 and a carving for $20. Thinking we were buying work done by the booth owners . As I am walking around I see the same art work over and over so I figured it was mass produced in some factory off site. Have no

idea where since they leave no tags on the work. My husband still thinks

it was carved by each person that was selling the crafts. Please , will you

confirm my thoughts. If it truly was hand carved by them it wouldn't look like

it was laser cut. And I am sure I would be paying awhole lot more than $25.

Thankyou for your thoughts.

I would bet that most of the "art work" in places like Labadee and Jamaica come from China.

There was a carved wooden statue that a guy in Dominican Republic claimed his grandfather did that I found in Labadee from a different guy with the same story. That guy apparently has a lot of grandkids...

They are not likely done by the seller.

Most of the vendors in the Caribbean fly to Miami or other major cities to buy in bulk from China, at least for the "handcrafted" woven and carved goods.
