If flying from US to Guam (US Territory) but changing planes in Osaka or Narita,,, do you have to pass thru passport control?

 

The other option of course is SFO to GUM

Not that I don't believe you. Just trying to understand the niuances.

 

Basically, a coworker has been given last minute directive to go to Guam for a week or so. His passport expires in 3 mos.

He can fly United SEA-SFO-GUM with a huge layover in SFO (no passport required)

Or, he can fly Delta SEA-KIX-GUM (not sure about passport requirement since he's not leaving the KIX airport) just changing planes.

Mainly because the flight will be coming in from a foreign country (Japan) - will have to clear U.S. immigration there and secondarily (and a major reason), he won't be able to board the flight to Japan in the U.S. w/o one.
