Passport/Immigrations ?

No, just security at NRT/KIX but you still need a passport.

please clarify why

Not that I don't believe you. Just trying to understand the niuances.

Basically, a coworker has been given last minute directive to go to Guam for a week or so. His passport expires in 3 mos.

He can fly United SEA-SFO-GUM with a huge layover in SFO (no passport required)

Or, he can fly Delta SEA-KIX-GUM (not sure about passport requirement since he's not leaving the KIX airport) just changing planes.

Mainly because the flight will be coming in from a foreign country (Japan) - will have to clear U.S. immigration there and secondarily (and a major reason), he won't be able to board the flight to Japan in the U.S. w/o one.

Passport expiration isn't an issue in this case. He just needs a valid one.

He'll need a passport to fly via Japan or any intermediate stop outside the U.S. even if it's just transiting.

The answers to your questions are a quick Google search away: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1148.html#entry_requirements
