Noisy adults in the Solarium?

I'm sorry for some of the responses you've gotten here. It's certainly implied that it should be somewhat quieter in the Solarium. The kids aren't shut out "for spite". The kids are shut out because they're loud and disruptive relative to (responsible) adults. Now, adults through good rearing and life wisdom should consider the needs of their neighbors and use discretion (In other words, if there's a person trying to enjoy some relative quiet, try being at least a little considerate of their needs and keep it down.)

Then again, have you been to a public library lately? In the ones close to me, there's not much quiet and not much enforcement of the rules with respect to being quiet. People are self involved. I guess we just need to resolve that's the way it's gonna be.:(

So its self involved to not be quieter in the Solarium but it ISN'T self involved to expect a quiet area where there is no rule or regulation stating it is a calm/quiet zone.

There are more reasons for not allowing kids then noise

I don't think there is any need for apologies to the OP. The question was, "How do you feel?" It was soliciting opinions, and people offered opinions. I don't see any responses that were particularly ugly or insulting.

you cruise critic people crack me up. I'm glad I'll never have to meet any of you!

Just back from the Oasis. Big ship. Crowded, noisy, crap food - but GREAT entertainment. We won't do big again, but it was an experience.

And as far as noise goes, you won't find a quiet spot on a big ship-at least not during spring break. Our cabin was quiet, though, and often our balcony was too.

If you're not a regular on CC, let me assure you that there ARE nice, considerate, helpful people on cruises. Not everyone is snarky like the people here. Oh, and folks, don't bother responding to my note - I won't read it. ;)

One cruise that I can remember was a group of teens taking over the hot tub and a small section of the lounger area. They weren't really loud (no drinking), but I was thinking they "took over". Another cruise there were a group of youngish adults were partying, the more they drank the louder they got.

I am curious, how does everyone know the Solarium is supposed to be adults only? Only the website lists the Solarium as adults only and there are some pizza and burger areas inside the Solarium on some ships. I would think most new cruisers have no idea of of the rules. Frequently we have seen small children allowed to stay with their parents.

There are no signs on the doors, and the only sign in the room says the pools may not be used by anyone under 16.

This is one of the reasons we take our Bose noise-cancelling headphones anywhere we want to read. Listening to our favorite music and being in the Solarium (or out on deck) is very relaxing with the headphones on.

Same here. I take my headphones and zone out the jibber jabbering. Do it at work, too. ;):D

I've never heard a thing about the solarium being a "quiet" area. You may picture it that way, but it's a pool area with a bar, so I wouldn't expect it to be. Yes, you are supposed to be an adult, but not quiet!

x2. It's not a designated quiet area, and the fact that there's a bar in the solarium with seating should reinforce that.

On our time aboard Enchantment there was a particularly rowdy group of St. Patricks revelers who spent a bunch of time in the solarium at one point and were quite loud, but it was what it was - nobody complained about it.

There are no signs on the doors, and the only sign in the room says the pools may not be used by anyone under 16.

There were signs very clearly posted on the doors on Enchantment, and a sign on a big pillar in front of the doors on Allure. I don't remember seeing one on Explorer, but the Solarium enforcement was much looser/non-existant on that ship it seemed.

That's good news that signs are finally being put up on the entry doors. Although I don't remember any signs on the Allure, I wasn't really looking for one!;) I'm positive there were none on the Explorer because I made a point to look. I'm wondering how many ships have some other signs besides the one at the pool.

It's always interesting to find out every ship is different.

Hmm, interesting topic. We (7 adults) will be enjoying the drinks package on our cruise and if there are too many kids screaming, splashing and all over the regular pools, we will consider hitting the solarium for some solice, but not from the noise, from the kids. Hopefully the week we go the numbers will not be too high, but we can deal if that's the case (heck, we've even done 2 Disney cruises without kids). I would think that after a few drinks in our group of friends we will be above a whisper while enjoying our adult time in the Solarium. But I guess if it's "too" quiet there, we will leave. Not our cup o'tea on a cruise to relax in quiet (I know, we all go on cruises and enjoy them in many different fashions.....I don't have an issue with that).

Although I don't remember any signs on the Allure

They were on a big cast-iron style standard that was placed more or less in front of (or off to the side of) the doors that opened into the solarium.

I did notice that they tended to, *ahem*, move around a lot. I think that more than a few people who wanted to bring their kids in were conveniently moving them so that they were less visible. Once the sign had been moved out of the way it seemed the floodgates opened.

There WAS family (kids welcome) time in the solarium on Enchantment during days which the outside pools were closed, but it was limited hours, and the kids were generally well behaved.

Enforcement was VERY good on Enchantment. There was one lady who wandered the area quite routinely and did a good job of escorting the <16 crowd out.

Wow some of the responses here are interesting. I have yet to go on my first cruise but from the Allure video, looking at photos, and reading reviews I assumed without even being there yet that that section of the ship would probably be much quieter and relaxed then others. Not total silence but a nice place to just relax and unwind. Can't wait to experience it for myself in a few weeks!

I am a little surprised that I thought of the solarium as a peaceful sort of adult-only place, when actually it may not be. We have only cruised once before and it was on the Oasis. We found the solarium to be our favorite place on the ship. We actually thought it to be a very laid back place where folks seemed to be enjoying their books and music with headphones. This whole thread has been enlightening.

I'm pretty sure the reason for no kids in the Solarium isn't as a respite for parents so they can throw down. I'm also pretty sure it is to provide a relatively serene area. Hence the peaceful decor, and no neon lights.

Perhaps. But there is also a difference between a "throw-down" and feeling that people are "talking and laughing" too loud.

Sorry but not everyone is going to abide by your ideal volume. Some people are louder than others. If you want everyone to live by your standards maybe a cruise isn't the right vacation for you.

You can say that about anyplace in life... the mall, church, sporting event, the beach, anywhere. There are loud talkers everywhere. There are loud talkers on vacation everywhere. I think your comment was a bit unfair. :(

i guess the point of the original post was that if you are calling it a solarium, one could see how it would be assumed that it would be a quieter area. my particular gripe is when i am in the thermal suite in the spa, and there are always a few people that have to be loud while everyone else is obviously sleeping and trying to relax. people need to start having some common courtesy for each other.

A bit harsh, don't you think? Although I don't entirely agree with the OP (there is nothing that says the solarium is supposed to be quiet), I understand what he or she is saying.

I've been annoyed by groups talking loudly at the Solarium, but they all adults; thus, they were not breaking any rules. The Solarium is the "adult pool", not the "quiet pool".

That's not entirely correct. RCI lists the Solarium under the "Simply Relax" category of activities, right along with the spa. They also use adjectives such as "soothing" and "tranquil" to describe it. So it's clearly not just "adults only" and is intended to be less hectic and loud than the main pool deck.

One of my favorite spots on RCI ships is the Solarium... but lately, there are folks in the hot tubs drinking daiquiris, talking and laughing loudly, Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against talking or drinking and having a good time. I do my share of both. But the Solarium is supposed to be a quiet place and I haven't found that lately on my RCCL cruises. Maybe I should get up and ask security to handle it. How do you feel?

Does it say somewhere that the solarium is supposed to be quiet?

Not trying to be sarcastic, just an honest question, because I can't remember seeing that.

OTOH, on both our cruises on the Adventure out of Spain, the solarium pool + hot tubs got taken over by big Spanish groups, making a lot of noise, and basically turning everybody else away who wanted to use pool/ hot tub. Their kids however, were in there.

I also prefer it to be quiet, but can't remember signs saying so.

Ok so what would you prefer? Maybe going on vacation isn't right for you? Maybe living in society isn't right for you? I thought that was a bit more unfair then saying maybe a cruise isn't right for you :D

Also to the person saying it isn't a place for parents to throw down, talking loudly does NOT equal a "throw down" if you will. Also there are people who don't want to be around kids who aren't parents

Actually, I don't think it's as bad or "unfair" as you're portraying it. I'm not really a big fan of comments like this, in general, but it is true that a cruise is a type of vacation where you know you will be on a ship with thousands of other people most of the time. If the behaviors like this that, as you say, occur any time you have enough people gathered in one place, are going to be overly bothersome to you, it certainly is something to consider when making a choice of what kind of vacation you'd enjoy.

I don't think calling it a solarium implies anything about quiet. The word solarium, by its definition, only implies an enclosed space that has sun exposure.

With 4,000 + people on some of these cruise ships with 3,000 + people drinking alcoholic beverages you are going to get some loud talking folks. On Sea Days everybody can't get loungers and chairs to hang out in the main pool area and look for a spot in the solarium and they are not just people looking for a nice quiet place but just a place to be able to sit. The best time to enjoy quiet time in the solarium is on port days when everyone is gone. When I want quiet time away from the madening crowd I head back to my private balcony. Everybody don't have an indoor voice especially when they have a little alcohol in them...not drunkenly belligerent but just a louder voice than normal!
