Going to be in Nice, France on upcoming cruise in June 2013. Can anyone tell me if there are places to go or things to do there without having to do cruise tour or private tour? Distance also to things to do. Thank you.

You can pretty much do anything without a tour (we have been doing that for over thirty years) but the question is are you willing to do your pre-trip homework and go off on your own. You can get around the region on trains, buses, or even a rental car. And regarding the previous post about taxis.....yes, they are quite expensive in that part of France. But the regional bus line still only charges a fare of 1 Euro :)

ChinaDoll1 ~ you've come tot he right place - you'll find lots of advice, recommondations, suggestions here on CC!! Click on the "search this forum" in the right hand column just under the page numbers and type in nice - you'll find lots and lots of questions and answers about this great city.

And Hank is correct - buses at 1Euro - great bargain!!! On our 2008 Med cruise we docked in VilleFrance and took bus to Eze and then to Nice and then back to the ship. Had a great day! It does take research but well worth it since then you can do what you like and not just what's offered by the cruise!

We returned to Nice last October for 4 days post Rhone River cruise and enjoyed it even more since we had so much more time - too buses to St Paul de Vence and Monte Carlo!! Somany small town to see vias bus or perhaps car rental or a small group tour - think about joinging with others on your roll call.

For Nice itself, the flower market is fantastic, the Promanade by the Mediterranean is wonderful, strolling through the shopping area or trying out the casino ~ there's also museums, restaurants - and a fabulous beach! All depends what you're interests are!!!

We hired a guide for the day and shared with 6 others from the cruise. We visited the daily market in Nice, then went to Monaco for the changing of the guards and then to Eze. A wonderful full day.

I think there would also be enough to keep you occupied just in Nice. You'll understand why they call it the Azure Coast.....beautiful!
