I'd like to hear from someone who sailed the Splendor out of NYC

Yes...they have regular trays.

Yes...Sushi

YAY! I hate those plates pretending to be tray things. And I love the Sushi!

L shaped balconies or "premium" (aft) 75sq. ft. as opposed to 35sq. ft

such as 8457, which is what we had (GREAT). There is a large over hang (in case it rains, you can still go on your balcony) Your bed faces the WINDOWS and there are 3 of them.

We have 6485 and there is a video on YouTube both the room and the balcony look awesome - I can't wait!

Are there any regular balcony cabins on this ship that have something special about them? Such as the "bowling alley" balconies on the Miracle and Pride.

Here is a link to my photos of 8446.

The balcony is longer and the room is set up differently. I liked the room but keep some things in mind. The bathroom door hits the bed when opened so you have to keep it closed. There is no couch, there are 2 chairs and a table. We would get woken up by the deck chair drag, our fault, we are usually aware of where the cabin is in relation to the public spaces etc but this time we weren't thinking.

We hope to do the Splendor in May and glad they have trays.

DW gives me her silverwear to stuff into pockets, much easier to deal with food, silverwear and drink when you have a tray.

17th of May I hope, it would be a privilege to sail with you, sir.

We had 8457...no noise at all. Same cabin and position as you. Do you mind my asking when you heard noise. I mean, I could probably understand out on your balcony during the day with the lido deck right above, but at night? Great pics, by the way.

Thanks!

We heard noise starting about 6:00 am, the deck stewards and people moving the chairs around. No noise at night just early a.m.

Oh...forgot to tell you. The sushi is NOT on the Lido deck. It is on deck 5....right outside of the Casino.....right next to the specialty coffee shop.

Thanks - that's what I was hoping for. I saw that dedicated Sushi place on the deck plan and I was all excited, then people were saying it was used for some kind of Tastings bar - I was not excited!

It was one of my favorite times on our last cruise (Miracle). I would get Sushi from the cart (they only had a little cart), while my DH would get himself a beer and me a glass of wine. We would sit there in the seats by the windows for about an hour. I would connect to the internet - it was the best place on the ship to do so - upload my pics and taunt my friends on Facebook. And it was very relaxing.

I HONESTLY am not trying to be confrontational. This is my schedule for the 15 day cruise in January was....keeping in mind I had the same cabin as you (just on starboard side)

I do not sleep

1. Up at 4am

2. Out to deck 10 with tons of other NON sleepers. Yes, I smoke. We would all go to the Buffet and get coffee and sit at those tables that look over the Aft pool and hot tubs.

3. 5;45 I went to the gym

4. 6:30 back to deck 10 for more coffee and my husband would be there by then.....(now it is crowded with people)

5. 7:30...back to our cabins for showers and get dressed for breakfast.

I did this for 15 days straight. Not once...was a chair from the staff (and certainly not passengers) ever moved. The lounge chairs were stacked high every evening and unstacked about 8 or 9 am.

I promise...I am not questioning you. The only reason I am stating all of this, is that I think it may have been something else....I just don't know what.

I don't doubt what you're saying but my experience was different. Unless it was raining, we were woken up by chairs being dragged. I am not a light sleeper and it woke me up. It may have been the ports, or the passenger mix. I don't know, I am just trying to let people know of my experience only, it's not the definitive experience of that cabin, but it was my experience on my sailing. You went to deck 10 which is 2 decks above my cabin. Did you watch what was happening on deck 9 everyday? I can only relate what I experienced, I'm not sure why you're questioning the veracity of my statements. Believe me when I say it started at 6:00 am, I would look at my watch.

I meant deck 9 not...10. 10 is the Rotisserie deck where I got my coffee...so sorry....this a correction.

You are getting angry and I don't mean for that to happen. I am NOT questioning that something woke you up every morning at 6. I believe you whole heartily. I am just wondering what it possibly could have been. I sat right there every morning for 15 days at that time and other than the people sitting at the tables with there coffee...there was NO activity.

I'm not angry just confused, as to why someone who was not there, would question my information. If you were on the same sailing and sat on deck 9 every morning then it would be different. Maybe it was a group of people on that sailing would move chairs to the area above my cabin every morning, maybe the deck stewards had different instructions from your sailing, I don't know what it was nor do I care, it was a great cruise and this was a minor annoyance for me, but for others it could be a big deal.

For all you folks that have cruises coming up on the Splendor... I want you to know about one of the best features on this ship. This is something that you don't have on the Spirit-class vessels or on the Conquest-class vessels or even the Dream-class... and which makes the Splendor perfect for cruising out of New York.

It's the dome that can be closed over the mid-ship Lido deck pool... which makes the mid-ship Lido area completely usable during periods of bad weather.

CarnivalSplendor-DomeClosed.jpg

We did a cruise out of Long Beach on the Splendor and ran in to some nasty weather in Puerto Vallarta. It was pouring rain outside, but with the dome closed over the mid-ship Lido deck, it was absolutely delightful out there. They have a fantastic heating system in there that keeps it toasty warm even when the weather is horrible outside.

I've been on a LOT of cruises on a lot of different Carnival ships... but during bad weather there is nothing that beats the Carnival Splendor.

Yes, I know that the Conquest-class ships have a dome that can close over the rear pool... but that's a much smaller area. What happens when bad weather hits is that everyone moves to the area under the dome, because it's the only place where you can sit on a lounger or enjoy the pool or Jacuzzi and still be protected from the weather. The area at the back of the Conquest-class ships is much smaller than the area protected under the dome on the Carnival Splendor.

So, all you New York people, you are lucky to have her!

One other thing I'll mention, just something for you to think about during a cruise on the Splendor...

She's got basically the same layout as the Costa Concordia. She was originally planned to be a Costa ship, but Carnival needed a new ship more... so she became the Carnival Splendor. So, as you are roaming the halls, just imagine the ship turned on her side and think about how you would get out. It's a chilling thought, I know, and I don't say it to ruin your vacation buzz... just something for you think about for a few minutes while you're onboard. Count your blessings, party on, but take five minutes and think about what those folks on the Concordia must have experienced. I love cruising as much as any of you... and the Concordia won't stop me... but I do think about those passengers and count my blessings!

I too am anxious for the report. Hopefully it will be more positives than negatives. I honestly wonder sometimes if we are expecting more than we should. I have had some great cruises, good cruises and not so wonderful cruises, but never really a bad cruise. After all I am happy to be away from the hectic schedule of the business.

Well folks, the first NYC Splendor cruisers are back home - poor babies ;). Hopefully they will rush to Cruise Critic first thing on debarking and tell us all about it. :D

We are all anxiously awaiting your reports!

My philosophy regarding most things is to high hopes and low expectations. I'm mostly interested in information. I'm like that robot in the movie Short Circuit - I need input ;)

Not sure where you got your information, but the Legend and the Miracle (Spirit class) have retractable glass dome roofs over the mid-ship pools also. I was fortunate enough to not need it on my 2 cruises on the Legend and the Miracle, but I was on the Victory waiting for sail away and the Miracle was in the next berth over. We watched them cover the pool during a sudden rain storm. It was quite cool to see from another ship.

Smoking is allowed on deck 9 aft? I smoke also & have cruised alot on the Miracle lately...where it's no longer allowed since January 2012. Just curious (and hopeful ;)). Thanks.

Ever wonder why FTTF is not on the Splendor? We're going next Easter on her really hope they have it then. Been watching diligently for it to show up in excursions.
