Just off the Explorer, 3/24-3/31/13

Recommended Posts

Off the Explorer yesterday...All in all, a good trip but the weather was not on our side for most of it. :o I didn't take notes so this won't be as organized as others but just some thoughts and I can probably answer questions, although I didn't keep any compasses.

My group - I was travelling with my family of 4 (DH, DD, DD) and 8 other family members. Loved leaving from Bayonne as we are only about 20-25 minutes away from the pier. We left at 10:15 and were checked in and waiting to board the shuttle within 20 minutes after arriving. We waited about 1/2 hour before we were able to get on the shuttle and headed toward the ship.

SHIP - The ship is in good shape, definitely some wear and tear but did not hinder this vacation at all. Some things didn't work (i.e., a few handicap buttons to get into the public restrooms) but I know she is going in for an overhaul next year (I believe?) so I'm sure it will receive a nice facelift. I had a balcony room on Deck 7, my DDs had a PR across the hall. Again, some wear and tear in the room, rust in the bathrooms and the water pressure in my DDs room was really bad. Our room steward was very good, did what needed to be done without being in the way. Always friendly in the hallways.

FOOD - I enjoyed the meals in the dining room. We had a table for 12 which was behind the staircase. The location was ok but I was happy they could accommodate all of us at the same table. I did not care for a lot of the new desserts. Service was good. At times they seemed overwhelmed though. Maybe they are given more tables now? Or just wasn't used to having such a large table? In any event, we enjoyed our dinners together since that was our time to be together with the kids after a day of roaming the ship with their friends. The Windjammer had the same food as usual.

CRUISE DIRECTOR - Richard Spacey was a real hit. I thought he was hysterical, as was his sidekick Chris Hopkins. He has a great sense of humor and was quick with his comebacks.

MEET AND MINGLE - I missed the meet and mingle. It was at 9:30 on the second day. I went down to the lounge around 9:35-9:40 and they were already doing the raffles so I didn't bother going in. I happened to meet someone on the roll call later in the week and she was not happy with the way it was run. Sometimes they are great and other times, not so much. :(

WEATHER - ugh, this definitely could've been better. Between hitting the storm while heading down towards Florida, the water was rocky and the wind just wouldn't quit. Luckily no one in my party got sick but I was worried as some of them get carsick at times. It was so breezy out but there were people making the best of it sitting in the solarium or by the pool in their bathing suits, while others were walking by with jeans and fleece jackets on. :D I cruise almost every year at Easter time and we usually leave from Florida or San Juan so the vacation starts off in warm weather. The weather patterns have been so unpredictable lately, I'm not sure how different it would've been.

PORTS OF CALL - IMHO, Port Canaveral was a waste of time. We arrived at 2:00 and got off the ship just because it was our first stop and we wanted to hit solid ground. They had a shuttle set up to take you to the beach or to the mall for $6 pp. We were just going to go to the mall because it was too cold for the beach. (I think it was low 60's and breezy the day we were here). We waited almost an hour and still weren't close to getting on the shuttle so we went back on the ship. Next day we arrived in Nassau, Bahamas. Again, we arrived at 2:00 p.m. and walked over to Junkanoo Beach. I knew it was close by and free so it was our best option (and it had free wifi!). And again, the sun was out but it was breezy. We stayed at the beach for maybe two hours and headed back to the ship. We were in port until midnight so we figured we could go back for our dinner at 6:00 and then come back off and shop...only to find out afterwards that all the shops close at 6:00 (except for Senor Frogs and some other eateries). So we didn't get any shopping done. It would be wise for a few of the shops to stay open later when ships are in port later than usual. We were hoping that at least the shops that are in the little security area would be open but they weren't so back on the ship we went. And then FINALLY, we get to Coca Cay, which was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. Maybe low to mid 70's, no breeze. Absolutely beautiful. The last two days at sea were breezy but you could get some windburn, like my DH did. :D

A few gripes that I have: The solarium hot tubs/pools always seemed to have kids in it. I wish they would enforce the rules. Also, the Quest had kids participating in it! Are people not reading the compasses to see its adults only or do they just not care? Also, in the Windjammer, at times they would just start blasting music. I really just found that annoying. Or maybe we just happened to pick the table every single time that was underneath the speakers. I saw people at guest relations complaining about the drink package on day one and heard several people complaining about the auto-tips.

We played lots of trivia, bingo, gambled a LOT in the casino and went to a bunch of shows throughout the week. The weather was definitely not what we were used to but traveling with my other family members was a great experience that I hope to do again real soon. Would I cruise the Explorer again? Definitely. This itinerary? Definitely not. I purchased two next cruise certificates so I hope to book something real soon. :D

I'm sure I'm forgetting other things but if anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to try and answer them.

:D

Looking forward to "my" next cruise =)

Good review Emem822 (my sister)

Just wanted to add that parents need to stay incharge of their little ones in the dining room. I can't believe how the kids were free to roam around instead of staying at the table with their parents. The staff was kind about it but I am sure it bothered them to have to watch out for them when carrying huge amounts of food to the tables.

Thanks for the review!

Regarding the pools, I noticed this on Explorer as well. However, I am usually more interested in how the crew responds when asked to enforce their rules.

As for the quest, last cruise (IOS) they never mentioned once that it was adults only and the game itself was tamed down. Did you notice the same thing?

Would you know more about why people were unhappy with the drink pkg? Was it the soda or the alcohol pkg? I was thinking about purchasing these before we go…

Thanks for any info!

As for the quest, last cruise (IOS) they never mentioned once that it was adults only and the game itself was tamed down. Did you notice the same thing?

I never saw any 'pool patrol' around to even mention it to any of them. I went into the hot tub once this whole cruise and during that time, one of the guys in the hot tub told some kids they couldn't come in. :D They were probably about 7 or 8 and said they had been in before with their parents and he said something like it was adults only and they left (but I think they went into the other one, lol).

As far as the Quest, they did mention it was adults only and they didn't want to be held responsible if their kids asked questions later on. It was definitely tamed down. I saw several kids that were about 4-5 years old. I have to say this was the most crowded Quest I have ever seen. People were standing/sitting in the stairways. It was still fun but I think that's mostly because of the cruise director's humor.

I spoke to a few people during the week who had the package and were enjoying it. lol I heard two different people at guest relations on day one saying they were sharing a cabin with someone who had the package and they didn't want to have to buy it. I'm not sure how it was handled.

Oh ok, that's not a big deal then. We are just trying to decide we have 4 that would like the soda pkg and DH and myself the drink pkg possibly. Was trying to find out how much the charges are but having trouble with the website. Would you know the costs by chance?

Thanks for the review!!!

I will be on the Ex in a little over 2 weeks. Not sure what kind of clothing to pack for the first and last days. I have only cruised out of Florida and never out of a northern port where the weather is cooler at the beginning and the end of the cruise. I think I will pack a couple hoodie type tops in case it is on the cooler side. Also will be taking a jacket along, just in case.

Sorry, don't know the cost. Forgot to mention that we had 5 rooms booked which = 10 bottles of wine. :D Definitely enjoyed that new option. All carried on in our carry ons with no issues.

The weather seems to be warming up so you might be lucky but who knows with this pattern lately.:) I boarded with a sweatshirt on Sunday and wore it once during the week. Also took a light jacket which I wore most of the week and a few light sweaters (but normally do that anyway).

Great review Emen thank you. I'm going on the Explorer in December. I'm curious where was the rust in the bathroom? :\

There was just some rust around the sink. Seriously nothing that would/should hinder your vacation. Someone posted pictures recently in their review (I'll see if I can find it). I didn't take pictures of my room.

Curious -- did you bring any wine (by the glass maybe?) to the dining room? Or was it all consumed in your cabins?

We had it in our cabins or put it in our own glasses and took it to shows/casino, etc. I don't think you would have a problem pouring your own in a glass and taking it to the dining room.

Great review...we were also on this cruise....enjoyed most of it except for the weather and rocky start! Would not do this itinerary again, as we thought the stop at port canaveral and nassau were a bit of a waste cuz of the times they stopped. Would definitely have loved a little longer or maybe even 2 days at Coco Cay, which I found absolutely beautiful! All said, we still enjoyed everything about Explorer and the cruise itself. The shows were absolutely wonderful. My favorites were the A Cappella band; the dance shows and the ice shows. The quest was crazy fun. Richard Spacey is hysterical. The March 31 cruise will be his last on Explorer :( But Leah, his sidekick from previous Explorer will fill his shoes and I think just as good as Richard. Now looking forward to our New England / Canad cruise end of August. Should hopefully be beautiful weather.

Did you get to the meet and mingle? I'm sorry I missed out on meeting you since you were one of the 'regulars' on the roll call. :D

Tell me about this band. Where and when did they play?

The shows mostly played inside the Palace theatre. That's where we saw the A Cappella group. They also have some stuff in the Royal Promenade, deck 5. Parades, 70's party, airplane making/flying....etc.

You can find Home Free at http://www.homefreevocalband.com/home/page.html but the 2 guys on the far left are not with the band anymore....they have 2 new guys who replace them. Check them out and you'll see what I mean. :)

I did meet & mingle .... but didn't feel like everyone was mingling, so I scooted out. ;) I felt the mingle was a little disconnected. :( I did win a $50 internet card. :) which was good since my daughter was in Paris and now I could at least keep in touch when out of range.

Sorry we didn't get to meet either. Maybe you will be on one of my other cruises!

I also enjoyed my Coco Loco's! ;) Did you have a nice trip back to where you live? We disembarked without any issues. Had an 830 departure and was thru customs just like that. Home by 930ish. :)

We were on the 3/15 cruise and we had great weather. The Captain said that your cruise was going to be a little rough due to the storm front.

We found the M&M to be a real disappointment. Lately it seems that the Cruise staff seem to think they have to entertain and they do not allow us time to MEET and MINGLE! Duh!!! The door prizes were nice but did not win one of them.

We also found the Quest to be somewhat lame from what we have seem in the past. I think this is partly because so many people now take the items with them that they had to come up with new stuff and it is not as entertaining? Yes, they did announce over and over that the Quest was Adult entertainment!

We had a great cruise. The Ex is a little tired but that did not detract from our enjoyment of the cruise.

As for the weather...you can never outguess what it will be like. I took layers. I left my winter coat in the car because I did not want to lug it around the first day waiting for the staterooms to be opened. I wore a long sleeve tee, with a sweat shirt and a light jacket. I was fine both embarking and disembarking. We parked at the pier so it was a quick walk to car so we did not have to stand outside for very long.

That band was very good. There was another show during the week called something like the Unexpected Boys or something boys, I can't remember right now. Had the type of music from Jersey Boys. Cheesy skit but the music was good. They left the ship in the Bahamas.

I heard the same thing about the meet and mingle = no mingling! When I walked by, it looked like a bingo game! Everyone was in their own little section. Definitely not a good place (or time!) to have it.

We got off the ship at 8:45 and waited a bit because one of my sisters bags was missing. But we found it within 15 minutes or so and had a cab waiting for us at 9:30. Couldn't have been easier! :D

The Avengers played in the screening room and the Palace theater one day. The other movies shown in the screening room were Total Recall, The Amazing Spiderman, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Rock of Ages, and People Like Us.
