Woof603 Posted June 14, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 14, 2005 Does anyone have any reports on the 2005 MV Discovery trip Ushuaia/Antarctic/Pacific/New Zealand and return? Thanks.
travelinglite Posted July 30, 2005 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2005 We took this cruise in January '05 (but omitted the Falklands as we had already been there). Nice fish & chips in town & do the penguin tour. We had a wonderful time. Good food, nice people. We love Buenos Aires (be careful, as 4 people in pre-trip hotel were robbed), just follow instructions about taking which cabs and where not to walk alone. Ushushia (spelling) has great shopping. Antartica was just beautiful. A pod of 22 whales passed us one night (it's dayhlight at 1AM). The wildlife is just beautiful & the penguins are so cute. The ship has naturalists and interesting lectures & movies about the area. We landed 3 times and also did a boat tour in the zodiacs. Met great people and have even visited with them since the cruise. Don't hesitate to take the MV Discovery. The rooms may not be as posh as we've had on previous trips, but the adventure was wonderful.:)
ghlinger Posted July 31, 2005 #3 Share Posted July 31, 2005 Nice fish & chips in town & do the penguin tour. Where were these 2 activities? Do they have this special cruise and prices every year? Wife thinking of cancelling because of our cats and flowers.
Woof603 Posted August 2, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted August 2, 2005 Thanks for the reply, Travelinglite. Did you do any more of the voyage beyond the antarctic? We're booked for the roundtrip to New Zealand and back to Nassau. Any comments on that portion? Anyone? Thanks.
Below Deck Posted October 2, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 2, 2005 Have you had any replies? I think you are taking the 100+ day cruise, correct? I am too. My e-mail is egoyomi@cox.net if you have more info. Thanks.
pralientje Posted October 3, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Woof603 and Below Deck, My husband and I are booked on the Auckland/Nassau cruise. Have you any idea if the ship is fully booked or how many people will join us. I know it is early days, but if you don't aks, you'll never know. That gives us 49 days on board (no more time available, sadly). Did you book it as one cruise or a combined one? The reason I am asking is that you get a 50% discount on laudry bills when booking consecutive cruises. In my opinion we have, in the opinion of Discovery we have not. Our cruise is called Grand Pacific, Galapagos & Panama Canal, but Discovery says it only counts as one! So we are not going to have the 50% discount. On a 49 day trip, you could buy a nice bottle of wine for the difference. The supervisor of Discovery was not there, so perhaps they will change their mind. PLease let me know of your experiences with them. My email adress is cwpoel@xs4all.nl. Thank you.

We are especially wondering about the dress codes and how formal it is. Are we talking about bringing a sports jacket and tie, or is a suit required? Also, they mention we will go ashore at least twice. Does this mean we have to choose, or does everyone get a chance at each stop?

Is there an inherent conflict between bringing high quality photographic equipment and being robbed in Buenos Aires?
Tony & Trevor Posted November 5, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 5, 2006 We have cruised to Antartica twice and this year took a 24 day cruise on the MV Dicovery. Most passengers wore 'evening dress' on the formal nights. You can please yourself at dinner. All landings are for all the passengers depenidng on weather conditions. We found some excellent 'cruise reviews' and photographs by typing in Antartic cruise reviews etc on google. We actaully hit an iceberg whils sailing in to Hope bay. The ship was damaged but everythinh was all right. You will have one of the best or the best holidays ever in Antartica. Kind regards, Tony.
