Donna: You mentioned in one of your posts that you went on a "Cruise Critic Galley Tour". Do you know how that was arranged? I'm going on the Sun on May 6th and I would be interested in something like that and perhaps, some of the other people on our Roll Call would be too.

The Exec.Chef attended our M&G and offered! We signed up and received an invite in our room.

hi Donna, this is Terry and Tom ( with the duct tape balcony) from your sunny sun cruise. I am really enjoying your review...it brings back such great memories. You did a great job on the meet and greet, it was nice running into people we had met during the rest of the cruise. I was wondering what type of latitude points you got for that cruise. I know you get double for booking more than 9 months out..and I thought you got extra for a suite, but wasn't this also a latitude cruise? We got 11 points but I thought it should have been 22. Just wanted to see if I am crazy or not. Thanks terry

  • 2 weeks later...

I was really excited to be going to Curacao. I am a huge baseball fan and my Texas Rangers have the #1 prospect in baseball and his is from Willemstad, Curacao. So, I guess I imagined if I wore one of my Texas Rangers t-shirts his whole family and all his friends would meet me at the pier! Yeah, right!

Anyways, I had done research on Curacao and knew in advance that it is a charming village with buildings in colorful hues. so, yeah, back to reality. (But sometime in the future when I meet Jurickson Profar and get his autograph on a baseball I will tell him I have visited his home town.

I woke up about 7. Slacker. Haha. What a surprise, mom was up too! We both went out on the balcony and watched as Curacao came closer and closer into view. We actually ate breakfast together! I decided to have the NCL-famous Crabcakes Benedict. All I can say is Y*U*M*M*Y!!!! Mom had scrambled eggs, sausage and english muffins. Then off to the library for the daily puzzles. We scurried to trivia and won with 18 out of 20.

Our friends, Tony and Charlene offered to let me tag along with them in port. They had been there two weeks earlier. I took a lot of great pictures and we landed at McDonalds for a while to use wifi. I had a very refreshing snack while there.

While almost to the ship we decided to pop into the casino... but I noticed a tv in the bar was showing the Boston/Baltimore baseball game, and as I had mentioned, I love the game, so the casino never saw a dime from me.

A while later, Tony and Char returned and we ventured back to the Sun where we were met with smiling crew with wet and cool towels and cold drinks and snack cake.

I met up with mom and we decided to have a late lunch. IA was closed so we went to the sports bar. I had a nice grilled chicken sandwich. And they had baseball on. Yea!

I decided to go up to the balcony and read a bit and get a little sun. In less than an hour I had decided that was long enough and I went in. I thought to myself... this cruise is half over. The first half had been wonderfully fun and I was hoping the next part would be too, fingers crossed.

It was soon time for evening trivia. Thanks to mom we won. She always says she pulls in the stuff that happened before the other team members were born. She was a super star that time!!! Thanks, mom!!!

We decided to go to dinner with Tony and Charlene in Seven Seas. We asked for a window table and were told "no problem if you don't mind sitting with a couple that were just seated". We replied "of course". The meal was fun. I cant remember what I ate, but I can remember the couple was a real hoot. He mostly smiled and looked lovingly at his "bride", while she did 99.9% of the talking from them. And by talking, I mean telling us racy stories about them. I picked my chin off the floor a few times. You just never know who you will meet on vacation. :)

More to come.

I slept late... guess I am getting relaxed. Off to IA for French toast. Mom got wild and crazy and had a bowl of corn flakes. We did well in trivia... 17 of 20. But only good enough for 2nd. Then mom drug me to a beanbag toss contest. Fun in the atrium. Then we went to the fruit and veggie carving class. Unfortunately, we were sitting next to a fussy kid and couldn't hear. We had arrived late and couldn't see much either so we left. So, if you are interested int his show, go early! (Mom and I have worked professionally as f&v carvers, so we wanted to see how the show would be, as the one on the Jewel had been laughable, but this guy was really good!

We went to IA for lunch and e both had tortilla soup (with avocado added) and steaks. The soup was excellent and mom liked her steak. I didn't much though.

Next, we played bingo. Did not win. Went straight to trivia and scored 16/20 which was good enough for a win!

Next it was time for the Cruise Critic cabin crawl. We had arranged this day/time at our M&G and I thought this worked out great. It was a sea day and everyone seemed rested and ready for fun. We started in Dale and Glenn's bow ph and ended in our stern one. The ones in between were varied types and configurations, including a sideways inside and one on the Oslo deck which is deck 6A, accessible only by stairs. We had a great turnout and our sweet butler Teresa had nice snacks waiting for us in our suite and oh yes, the blender was in full use! We had a delightful time with great folks from our roll call.

Guess we really had fun, because we made it to afternoon trivia ok, but after that we returned to the room to take a little nap before dinner... and I woke up at 4 a.m. So, I turned on the t v and watched "The perks of being a Wallflower", and when it was over it was time to get up for Day 8 breakfast.

To be continued.

Mom and I woke up around the same time. But I was in the mood to walk around and get some exercise. So, mom rolled back over.

We ended up at IA together and we both ordered omelets. I had three cups of french press coffee, guess the many hours of sleep had a negative reaction on me. Maybe I was just vacation-relaxed!

We went on to trivia and won. It never gets old :) We discussed going ashore (in St. Maarten), but it was raining, so what did we do? We marched to the spa! We booked one hour massages for 2 p.m. We really didn't feel like being outdoors so we wandered around until lunch time. We had burgers in IA. Mom had something added to hers, yes, avocado! I asked for some jalapenos and they had them. Heaven!

Soon it was time for our massages. Tessa gave me my massage and I thoroughly enjoyed it. After a little chill time, we made it to trivia and 16 out of 20 was good enough for second place, lost by one point!

I had made a reservation for Teppenyaki at 7:30, and was the first to arrive, but 10 more joined me. A young man, Ray was celebrating his 11th birthday and a couple was also celebrating their 31st anniversary. I ordered a Midori Martini and whew! Potent and tasty. Ray's mom had brought a bottle of wine and I also helped her drink it. So I was having F-U-N!

I like Teppenyaki, but I am very particular about my meal. I don't really like rice, so I ask for veggies instead. And I make sure ahead of time to arrange an entree of just lobster, at an up charge. I want it cooked (not overcooked) in just butter with NO soy sauce. It is amazing. It was embarrassing how much they gave me. I am not sure, but I expect my friend, Chef Pineiro may have had a hand in it. Just loved this meal. A true highlight. Great food, great company.

I guess I have to say that I just love the Sun. While I would give our Sun South America cruise in 2009 the nod for ports, this cruise really excelled in service and on board experience. I think having old friends on board was an added plus. This is in addition to the wonderful new friends we made too! Just having the best time!!!

What happened next is "oh, a little unusual"... I returned to the room and the "do not disturb" sign was on. I quietly open the door as to not disturb mom and I notice she is NOT THERE! Within seconds of my doing so, there was Daryl, our steward. She had waited around so she could turn down my bed and to make mom's sofa into a bed. She didn't know why we had the "DND" sign on so long!!! I spent ten minutes apologizing and she just smiled and laughed as she was always doing. I felt so bad, and later when MIA mom returned and I told her, she did too!

We saw Joe and Patty (sassy gal) and they let us use their platinum laundry perk. Yippee! (Note: AFter this cruise, mom and I each cross the threshold into "platinum-hood"!!! And the laundry bag rocks!!!) How sweet of them to share with us!!! They are literally across the hall from us... we say goodnight and look forward to day 9.

what Happened to you? I was enjoying reliving our cruise... Hope all is well. We booked another cruise, this time on the getaway---but after some reviews of the breakaway we decided we were ready for a change of menu..and bigger balconies. So we cancelled and switched to the oasis, next february.

Come back to your review!!!
