Heathrow is about 25 miles closer to Southampton than Gatwick.

I would think you would be best flying to whichever airport is cheapest as your ground transportation cost are not going to be that much different.

Here's some info from the Southampton Univercity site:Travel Information

Here are suggestions on making your way to Southampton:

1. By Bus & Train from Heathrow:

Railair Link bus service to Woking train station leaves Terminals 1-to-4 approximately every half hour. (Visit airport Information desk in arrivals area for departure location. Airport maps can be found at www.baa.co.uk/main/airports/heathrow/ --> getting here --> By Bus or Coach.) Bus-only ticket (approx £8) can be purchased when boarding, or at curbside from attendant before bus arrives; alternatively full bus/train ticket for entire journey (should be less than £20) can be purchased at Heathrow train station desk. From Woking, take Southwest Train service to Southampton (trains approximately each half hour). Train ticket available inside station, on left-hand side (train ticket not necessary if full Heathrow-Southampton fare paid at Heathrow). Woking-Southampton train fare should be less than £20 (highest during peak travel times). Ask for single (one-way) ticket to Southampton Airport Parkway OR Southampton Central Station (see * below). Allow between 2 and 2.5 hrs for entire Heathrow-to-Southampton journey. More details and timetable available at www.swtrains.co.uk. (See also ** "Single-versus-Return Tickets" below.)

Finish journey by taxi (see below).

2. By Cross-country Bus from Heathrow Airport:

National Express bus service leaves Heathrow from the Central Bus Station, which is a short walk from Terminals 1, 2 & 3; Terminal 4 is 10 minutes away by bus (visit airport Information desk in arrivals area for directions to departure location, or see www.baa.co.uk/main/airports/heathrow/ --> getting here --> By Bus or Coach.) Single (i.e. one-way) tickets to Southampton are £11. Service SX 035 (nonstop, 1hr 25min) or NX 032 (stops at Basingstoke and/or Winchester, up to 2 hours) will arrive at Southampton Harbour Parade Station, near the city centre. Buses leave approximate every hour. Reservations and timetable available at www.gobycoach.com.

Call taxi at the Southampton National Express/Harbour Parade Station for trip to the Bolderwood Conference site, University Halls of Residence (Chamberlain Hall), or your hotel (see *** below). Fare should be between £5 and £10, with trips taking less than 15 minutes.

3. By Direct Taxi from Heathrow or Gatwick:

This option, which costs approximately £50, can be arranged by contacting English Rose Collection, at Tel: +44 1329 847 000 (01329 847 000 when calling from within UK)

Fax: +44 1329 849 286 (01329 849 286 UK)

Email: mail@englishrosecollection.co.uk

4. By Train from Gatwick Airport:

Southwest train service (www.swtrains.co.uk) leaves for Southampton from the lower level. Trip lasts less than 2 hours, at price of approximately £30. See www.swtrains.co.uk and www.baa.co.uk/main/airports/gatwick/ for further details.

5. By Cross-country Bus from Gatwick:

Take National Express bus service from South Terminal to Heathrow (£14, just over an hour), then follow (1), (2) or (3) above.

6. By Train from London Waterloo:

Trains leave approximately every hour. Single (one-way) fare should be less than £22 (highest during peak travel times). Ask for ticket to either Southampton Airport Parkway or Southampton Central Station (see * below). Fastest trip lasts approximately 1hr 5min. See www.swtrains.co.uk for details and timetables.

Finish journey by taxi (see below).

7. By Taxi from Southampton Airport:

Taxis can be found (i) just outside the main (only) terminal, (ii) by walking 5 minutes over the bridge to the front of the Airport Parkway Train station, or (iii) by calling one of the numbers below.

(*) Southampton Airport Parkway versus Southampton Central Train Stations:

Southampton Central is closest to hotels near the city centre (Ibis, Novotel and Highfield House).

Southampton Airport Parkway -- the stop before Southampton Central -- is closest to the Bolderwood Conference site, Chamberlain Hall (i.e. University Halls of Residence), or the Hilton Hotel. Nearly all fast trains from London (and through Woking) stop at this station.

Taxis wait outside the main exit of both Airport Parkway and Southampton Central stations (main exit of Central station is on "right-hand side" when arriving from London). Fare to hotel or Bolderwood conference site should be between £5 and £10.

(**) Single (i.e. one-way) versus Return (i.e. round-trip) Tickets:

Depending on your plans, for all bus and train tickets, it may be worth

asking about up to 5-day return tickets, since they are typically less

than two single fares.

(***) Local Taxis:

8055 3333 Uniline Taxis

8033 3993 Radio Taxis

8046 6339 Fleet Cars

8044 4444 City Cars

8022 3450 A-to-B Taxis

8022 2222 ATS Taxis

Note: if calling from a mobile phone of from outside Southatmpton add

"023" prefix to these numbers.
