Black Taxi Scam to Gatwick

Was I scammed? Called for a black taxi to drive us from Savoy hotel to Victoria Station to get Gatwick Express. While en route the dispatcher comes on the radio "all trains out of Victoria are down for 2 hours...the whole system has been shut down". My antenna went up immediately...but my wife was petrified of missing our flight. So we allowed the driver to drive us to Gatwick for 80 pounds. When we got to Gatwick, the fellow behind us on line said he just took Gatwick Express...no problem. We then confirmed that there were absolutely no problems with the Gatwick Express that morning from the Gatwick Express information booth at the airport. We really liked our driver and felt horrible that he would scam us like that...if that's what happened. Any recourse?

I'm afraid it sounds like you have been "taken for a ride" (excuse the pun )

£80 sounds a high fare to me as well, was the meter running?

The rate is what I pay a Standard car to take me to the airport.

 

There have been occasions when the Gatwick express has let me down. eg 3 or 4 weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon there were only 2 trains operating!

In July of 2002 the Hilton Olympia concierge arranged a private car transfer from the hotel to Gatwick Airport for three of us with all our luggage at a cost of 50 pounds.
