ok i saw that you can pay $19.99 to do a nature walk excursion on HMC - does this mean you aren't allowed to explore the island on your own? i just dont see paying $20 to do a nature hike -was hoping just to explore it on my own.

I'm guessing it's a "guided" tour. IMHO I would not be wandering around an island on my own. Anything can happen. You can't call for help and the ship will leave you behind. :eek:

HMC is the private island, so you wouldn't have to worry about being "bothered" by the locals. Very few people live on that island. There is no town there.

 

It is small and I would have no problem walking around on my own.

 

I would not pay someone to show me around. Maybe the guide will explain the flora and fauna, etc. If you want to pay for that, it would be worth the money. But just to walk around on your own? No...I wouldn't pay for that.

the only people on half moon cay are employees of carnival and there job is to take care of the island and run it when the ships pull in

I too rented clamshell and I also found it HOT! It was $12.

DH and I eventually pulled beach chairs under shady trees (far down beach)

and this was FREE, breezy and we got great tans.

When we went to Princess private Island we walked up the coast line for a good hour. Around the bend we found people from the ship, could tell by the towels, without any clothes on (thought we were back at Orient Beach). While I hung back DH kept walking. Very nice people, came right over and talked to him without grabbing a towel, so were propably used to all natural. So take that walk, but be carefull what you find!

There are paved paths all around the island with signs pointing to different places and signs talking about the history of the island. If you stay on the path it just does a big circle around the island. Beautiful place!
