Select Dining and Reservations ???

This will our first time choosing Select Dining for our upcoming Med cruise. I love the flexibility this offers with such a port intensive cruise. But, I have been reading some posts here on CC about making reservations. To me, it defeats the point if I have (or it is highly recommended) to make reservations for each day.

How long are the lines typically if you do not make reservations?

There generally is very little wait, but I've seen lines of maybe 5 couples waiting to be seated. Reservations just get you in a little faster...but they aren't required.

We tried making reservations once, but were told there was no room at that particular time, so we should just show up. Of the 5 nights we were there, we had to wait 15-20 minutes twice, and were seated almost immediately the other 3 times. I got the feeling that if we had been open to sitting with others (we wanted just a table for two), it would have been no wait at all.
