Thinking about doing the Gold Panning/Sled dog/40 Degrees Below excursion with the White Pass Scenic Railway. Both around 3 hours long. Doable or just back tracking? OR do the other dog excursion, Musher's Camp & Sled Dog instead? Have kids 10 and 11. Thanks in advanced. FYI on the NCL Jewel

Skagway is our favorite port. The first year we cruised to alaska, we took a bus tour (Southeast Tours) which took us up to the Klondike and included the Sled dog camp with lunch. We loved interacting with the dogs and puppies and also seeing the great museum of Alaska animals. For an extra fee, you can take a dog sled road also. I think kids would really enjoy this. On the tour we also saw Emerald Lake the Alaskan desert. The drive up was spectacular with several sightings of bears, goats and porcupines.

The next year we cruised again to Alaska, we rented a car and drove up the same route. We saw bears along the road at least 5 times and were able to do the drive in a leisurely manner stopping to take pictures, etc.

You can actually down load a mile by mile guide for the Klondike highway. From from what I have learned our tour and car trips provided a lot more to see than the white pass railroad.

The mushers camp in the Yukon will give you lots of puppy time. Michelle Phillips who runs it, is a well known and loved musher in the North. Her husband is also a well known musher. They have children so they sorta know that kids like...it is a good experience....The other sled dog experience in Skagway also has puppies to love on....and their sled dog ride is a bit longer....about 2 miles...also in a cart...while Michelles' is a bit shorter...Both have puppies, do what works best for you....The train ride is spectacular.....
