Mykonos - walk to town from pier?

Recommended Posts

Depends where you docked. There are two places..one closer than the other. On Celebrity the other week, we docked at the further one. They provided a shuttle for free to town.

While the walk is not long.... it is on a curvy and narrow laned road. It is a little scary with the cars zipping by and no real sidewalk. So while we love to walk, we chose the safer way. Well....I guess safer is relative! hehe

When we docked on Windstar, it was a 5 minute walk to the end of the pier and another 5 into the centre of the town. If you are physically fit and active, you will have no patience for a shuttle. We are in our fifties, fit and exercise regularly and we wouldn't give a shuttle a moment's thought unless it was waiting or us and there were no hassles with lines. If you have physical issues, a shuttle may be necessary.

I find that the problem with these boards is when you ask a question like this, we don't know if you are 30 or 80, fit or walk with a cane and similarly, you don't know if the person answering you is any of the above. The answers aren't much help without a sense of the questioner and the one responding.

Andym - I'm also having trouble viewing your photo.

Thanks everyone for your answers. Realproperty - I agree that its important to know the age of a person and activity level. I neglected to give our ages, but did note that we're walkers and wouldn't mind a walk of a few miles.

I'm glad to hear that its a walkable distance - hate waiting for those shuttle buses.

We were just there last week. There was a shuttle that was operated privately and you had to pay for it. I don't remember the cost, but we still had a little walk from the shuttle to town. We were in there very early and everything is whitewashed and there were lovely flower petals on the ground everywhere. Some were hot pink and others purple. Quite a sight. I loved it there.

Perhaps the question that people should ask is...Is the walk worth it?...If the walk is dull and boring, take the shuttle...walk in the areas where it's interesting, not the dusty road from the pier into town...

There's so much in Europe that can only be seen by walking, don't waste your time sweating the small stuff...after all, your time there is very limited.

If I have ten hours in port, I want to spend almost all that time breathing in the culture, not simply walking as I do at home.

Just back from the Grand and yes there was a shuttle and it was around $3.00 each way, there were plenty of busses and never had to wait for the bus. the walk was about 15 minutes....

The Brilliance of the Seas shuttle was $4 per person each way, and we had no wait on either end. It's a shame they don't provide a free shuttle, since I thought the walk looked dangerous. It's on a twisting road with little or no shoulder and lots of traffic whizzing by. It's not a long trip (less than 10 minutes by bus) and as a previous poster mentioned, you can see exactly where you're headed most of the way, but it's not for the fainthearted.

Did the Grand Princess dock north or south of town? I'm planning to walk to the beach which is just north of the town and I'm wondering if where the Princess ships dock takes me closer?

I've also learnt that a 5-10 minute walk is usually 30 in Europe...LOL...

You have to gauge each situation as it happens. The 10 minute walk from the Piraeus metro to the ship was actually 30 but the ship LOOKED so close we decided to try it...and regretted it, due more to the heat and traffic nois ethan anyhting else.

You never know until you actually do it.
