Ideas for Nassau, Bahamas

I am traveling by royal caribbean cruise in march 2014. I am looking for something to do thats between the hours of 7am to 2pm, Shopping or Beach laying. Any recommendations? Thanks

Shops open between 9 and 9:30 and are right outside the port exit.

You won't have any trouble finding shopping opportunities and cafe's in the area.

As for beaches, there's a public beach (junkanoo beach) just a 10 minute walk outside of town. (just make a right and follow the walk along the wharf and around the hotel).

There are also Hotel beaches that require day passes. Sheraton is quite popular for families, Breezes for adults only and Sandals for couples.

On Paradise Island, there's Atlantis and RIU (both require day passes) and the public beach at Cabbage Beach.

With such a short time in port, I'd suggest a little shopping and a couple of hours at Junkanoo beach. This beach has concessions, tiki bar, chair rentals and restrooms. Cabbage beach does not.

scubagirrl, my 24 year old daughter and myself will be in Nassau and Freeport in April. 8-5 both days. We like beaches. Which ones would you suggest?

Looks like your date will be during the Spring Break / Easter Break timeline.

Since the free beaches will likely be a zoo, I'd suggest with the Sheraton or British Colonial Hilton day pass.

There's plenty of great info on this board about both properties.

Thanks. I hate going spring break, but my daughter is a social worker for a school, so we still have to work around her schedule. I will look into those beaches!

Here's a peek at what you'll experience at the Sheraton, if you decide to get this day pass.

Thanks for the great pictures! This is what we have decided to do. We're going with a bunch from our roll call so it should be a fun day! That pool is gorgeous!

You're quite welcome! Cyber Kat - I'm sure you'll have an amazing time. The pool had a swim up bar, music and was never crowded (at least in 2012 when we went). Enjoy!

As long as we're talking about stuff to do in Nassau (and forgive me if this is been covered, I skimmed the thread very quickly)...how far is it from where Carnival docks their ship to the Pirates of Nassau museum? I've been eyeing that one on the Nassau-Paradise Island website because it just looks so goshdarn interesting. :D

It's kind of hard NOT to like all things piratical when your birthday is also International Talk Like A Pirate Day.:p

You're welcome! Did you two decide on the Sheraton day pass?

Hey Shay! I'm compiling all the info for about five different day passes. I do like the idea of having lunch at The Fish Fry (reviews of Goldies both on CC, TripAdvisor, and pics on Flickr -- all say its a must). So we'll see. For now, the Sheraton pass is a front runner.

Is the Sheraton close to the docks?????

We had to take a cab there, so it definitely wasn't within walking distance.

Hmmmmm, I might have to consider Goldies on my next Nassau trip.

I missed this when you posted.

Hope you havent left yet.

The Pirates museum is about 4 short blocks from the port.

Just make a left on George street where the jitney's line up. You'll see it on the right.

It's a fun adventure.

We are going to have a full day in Nassau, and I was wondering if I really need a tour/excursion for Atlantis? I am not wanting to swim there, just go and see the resort and maybe shop, see the aquarium. Do you need to book a tour to do that? or can I just catch a cab there and wander around and then head back to town to do other things? Does the aquarium charge some admission? I really want to see the pirate museum also.

Thanks in advance! just trying to make the most of my dollars!

So you would recommend it? I have seen mixed reviews. Some say it's not worth the price.

My wife and I want to do the sam thing. Just check out Atlantis while the girls are doing the swimming thing. I heard that you can go to shops and casino free without paying admission.

The only thing you can do for free is go to the casinos and shop in the old coral towers and Marina village. You are no longer allowed to wander the lobbies,. check out the decor or even peek out the windows. Security will escort you from the main door to the casino.

As for waiting for the "girls", I don't know how old they are, but you can't just send your kids out to the pools and slides without an adult.

(besides, there' 10,000 strangers out there).

The Aquarium is off limits without a pass. DIGS Aquarium passes are $40pp.

The girls are both 21 so I think they will be ok. I think the bride and I may go to Junkanoo Beach and hang out for a bit. Just want to make sure the girls make it back to the boat cuz the excursion says it's til 5:30 and the cruise ship leaves @ 8. They want to stay at Atlantis as long as possible. Not sure what time they close the pools?

Pools close at 7, slides close shortly before.
