Frist Cruise for my Single Son travelling in Breakaway Studio

So any thoughts on how to provide or place him about the ship so as to meet single female type passengers?

 

My Son is sailing with us on the Breakaway early June 2013 so we put him in a Studio Single to allow him to meet other single type guests easier. Don't want to feel like he is not part of the family this trip but we want him to be able to avail himself of...well, less parental overseeing. (You have to keep this post a secret from him cause he will be...well let's just go with embarrassed if he knew.)

 

He is a almost done with his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at 24. He is not the nerd type. Tall, fit, clean shaven, and of course very handsome along with being a well mannered gentleman when his parents are around. He has done several youth Hostel trips around Europe so he is not shy. I can't remember if he speaks Russian or German as a second language for his A Levels (I think he did 11 or 13 of them.)

 

As this is a family outing he will be with us on most of day trips around Bermuda. We are a party of 5 so another single would not be a burden on shore.

 

My thought was to get him in the Vibe Deck and away from the noise of families with children. His stateroom is a Studio so he will be meeting other that way.

 

Any help with meetings, activities, parties, bars, clubs or decks where the Singles tend to hang out on NCL ships along with comments on customs or ship "rules" for singles would be great too. Just don't want him getting bored and moping around our cabin during our own Romantic Package times.

Not trying to find him a date rather I am trying to help advise him about cruising. He is not the forum user type. He is better at showing up and starting the party.

 

As a parent I have never interfered with his dating life much before. And as I said if he has more information about how to meet others he won't be knocking on our door because he is bored. My hope is he will spend the entire cruise, except for the occasional meal, meeting others and having that great shipboard "romance" the brochures all seem to promise (not that he should do anything foolish...)

He is not looking for a hookup, more of a group to have fun with.

 

At 24 I was looking for a hookup :) From the reports of the studios, it sounds like they may not be best for single young men looking for single young women or peers to hang out with. Just let him go out and see what and who he finds on the ship. I bet most peers are with their family and find reasons to sneek off to say hi to folks that appear to be in his age group.

Quick word of advice - don't suggest to your son that the studio cabins and lounge are for 'singles' as he may end up getting himself in some trouble! Quite a few solo travellers aren't single but for whatever reason sometimes travel without their spouse or partner.

 

I travel solo and am a 28 y/o female, I have sailed in the studios on the Epic twice. Yes I happen to be single but I am not looking to 'hook up' or meet a man when I cruise and although I'm generally very easy going I would be offended if people were to think that is why I was there and presume I was up for that.

 

Give your son some credit, he's 24 and from the sounds of it fairly independent, I'm sure he is more than capable of meeting people in his own way. That said, it is always worth going to the solo traveller meeting in the studio lounge on the first night to see who else is there - I've met several people who were in their 20's, staying in a studio but travelling with family. Also the nightclub is where most the younger (or young at heart!) passengers end up towards the end of the night.

Like Lara, I have sailed on the Epic in a studio. I'm married with 2 kids and the "boys"-DH and kids have no interest in cruising. Plus I get a "mom getaway" once a year.

 

We had singles, who just were taking a vacation from high pressured jobs ranging in age from 39-59, a group of travel agents, a group of retirees, divorced or widowed who like to cruise together but not keen on sharing a cabin and my favorite, a lady travelling with her daughter's family. The studio lounge let her "hide" from daughter to avoid being an oncall babysitter and she came to dinner with us a few times when daughter was being a little too bossy. Also we had some older singles that were travelling with extended family that choose to book a studio then be the 3rd in a regular cabin stuck on a sofa bed.

Lots of places on every ship where singles will be hanging out, the pools and pool bars and casino and nightclub all come to mind. Breakaway is such a large ship, I'm sure there will be plenty of young, single women traveling in pairs or groups, in addition to those in the studios. Plus, most ships have singles meet and greet gatherings. I'm sure your son won't have any trouble meeting others his age, not just for dating, he's obviously spent a number of years in college so he'll know where to look even better than we do. No need to worry --- and, as a parent myself of young adults, I don't think he will appreciate too much advice! Just relax, sounds like a great trip.

My advice is not to worry about it. Your son will socialize and meet people in his own space and time during the cruise, its really inevitable! Just be mom, only not so mom, ya know? The more pressure he sees you having over his social life on the cruise, the less he's bound to enjoy it.

If I was 24 & single and went on an NCL ship like this, I would hang out ANYWHERE there is dancing, drinking, or live music....places like O'Sheehans,Maltings, Comedy Club ( women like to go to comedy clubs,too), The Waterfront, GYM ( for sure there will be ladies there!), and OF COURSE- THE POOL & SUN DECKS...where many ladies hang out to get tan and be seen..I would try & get a lounge chair near a few nice- looking girls and take it from there....BTW- clean shaven is NOT the popular look today...72% of women say they like the "rugged, 5 O' clock shadow look"....saw it on the news, and you'll see MANY of today's stars with that look...just an FYI.....I'm sure he'll have a great time...Let us know what happened when you get back!!

I have always liked the "five o'clock shadow," look. My husband has it, with a mustache, and I love it.

Barb- Funny, I have had a moustache since I was 16..I am 60 now and shaved it only ONCE since then...my wife also likes the "FOS" look...I am semi-retired now, so I only shave every 3 days, OR if we're going out...problem is it can be irritating to some ladies at certain times LOL....-if you get my drift.....FYI- I meant kissing, of course.....

My advice is to let him be him~~ let go~~I have a friend who will not let go and her son is 32~~so sad~~I really hope that the studio cabins do not get a bad name~~for hooking up~~sometimes people need their space~~ I am cruising on October 6th in a studio cabin and just want a stress-free cruise and sometimes the best cruise is by yourself~~I have learned that the hard way!:)

The "solo" co-ordinator will arrange meal groups, ice bar etc.. but it will be down to him to sign up for the events.

 

But the studio groups can very, on my 3 trips on Epic there have been very few 20-something's. A lot of older divorcees or married people who are cruising alone for a variety of reasons.

As a solo male in my 30s I had a lady old enough to be my Mum make a move on the first cruise lol!

 

Just let him be, do the things he wants to do. He could equally meet a few other guys and have fun shooting hoops or drinking. He's grown up now, let him build up his own confidence!

Also note there are a lot less studios on Breakaway so the studio lounge solo meetings may be only ~20 people ..
