beehive273 Posted May 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 28, 2013 We were scheduled to be on Santorini Thurs May 23 on our cruise ship Journey. Predicted high winds in that area forced our ship to abort those plans and dock at Bodrum, Turkey instead. I am curious to learn if anyone else has a Santorini story on that day.. maryann ns Posted May 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 29, 2013 No we were not there, but I hope you enjoyed Bodrum. It is a wonderful, scenic port and easy to explore on your own. I hope you got to the underwater archaeology museum in the crusader castle.
TucsonRick Posted May 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 29, 2013 Winds and waves around Santorini can be dicey. The first time I was there, when the ship dropped anchor the chain broke and the anchor was lost. The water was fairly calm so we tendered ashore. Shortly thereafter the winds and waves kicked up and we were told we could not return to the ship because they could not hold the tenders steady. We waited all day for things to calm down. Around 8:00, we were allowed to board a tender. When we got to the ship, they had a tough time holding the tender steady and we had to jump to the ship. Fortunately we were all fairly young and able-bodied and nobody went in the water. These many years later, with a bad back and an oxygen tank, I would not be able to do it. beehive273 Posted May 30, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted May 30, 2013 Thanks for your reply..That sounds like a little too much adventure! Almost the same thing happened to us this last week on Chania. We had been tendered in then the wind came up and the tenders couldnt run. The ship moved to the Chania Souda port.. Imagine us on land looking out and not seeing our ship! When we returned to the tender dock we were told we would be bussed 30 minutes to the Souda port to reboard The Journey. We then had a long walk to the city-hired bus.. quite a day..quite an adventure! Ah.. "vacation" are at times for the young!! Carpe diem when you can, right?
