love2travel41 Posted May 31, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 31, 2013 Would someone please tell me what the "Golden Staircase" near Skagway is. Is it worth seeing? How does one get there? Thank you,
huskyguy Posted May 31, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 31, 2013 The "Golden Staircase" is the toughest part of the multi-day Chilkoot Trail hike (very steep with huge boulders to navigate) - usually reached on the second or third day of the hike. Well worth seeing :)
bonvoyagie Posted May 31, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 31, 2013 This would be one of those "things to do when not on a cruise" items. The trail hike usually takes 3-5 days of heavy duty backpacking. In some places there is no real trail - just markers. The golden staircase is at the summit - about halfway between Dyea and Bennett. The trail can be walked either direction. Take a look here for more info http://www.nps.gov/klgo/planyourvisit/chilkoottrail.htm BTW if you take the train to Bennett you can hike a few hundred feet down the Chilkoot trail and back - then you can say you hiked the end of the Chilkoot Trail :)
