Smoking/Non-Smoking Areas on Independence of the Seas

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We are Celebrity cruisers and are contemplating a cruise in the Canaries this October. One area of concern for us is smoking. I know there's a current post on here that is similar but I want to be more specific. The smoking policy on the RCI website states, "Generally, smoking is permitted outdoors on only one side of the ship". Is anyone familiar with which side this is on the Independence?

"Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, food outlet, theater, hallway or corridor; ". What about any of the bars or clubs?

I have read that smoking is permitted in the casino but that won't be an issue for us.

We have only sailed Celebrity and appreciate their strict non-smoking policy. For the areas that are designated non-smoking on RCI, is this policy enforced?

Thanks in advance.

The biggest difference you will see between Royal and Celebrity is that Royal allows smoking on all ocean facing balconies, regardless of which side of the ship they are on. The reference to smoking only on one side applies to the pool deck and deck 4 outside promenade only.

Smoking on the inside is limited, and can vary cruise to cruise. A very recent cruiser can probably tell you exactly what bars allow smoking now, but that might not be the case 6 months from now.

Thanks for the information.

So to clarify then, smoking is allowed around the pool?

When I sailed on the Indy smoking was allowed on the pool deck port side BUT not directly next to the pool in those loungers. it was at the table and chair areas at the edge - further away from the pool

We were on IOS in May and smoking was permitted on the port side of the pool deck but at the edge of the deck only, port side of the sun deck but again at the edge only and not the full length of the deck and port side of the promenade deck.

Smoking is also permitted on all sea facing balconies but is not permitted in any of the bars or casino as this is a UK departure. The only inside area where smoking was permitted was the connoisseur club.

In fact, it was the first cruise we've been on where we didn't hear people whinging about smoke and the smell of smoke.

So can someone clarify this for me please? If the ship is a UK departure, there are more restrictions regarding where smoking is permitted? Do the restrictions remain in effect for the duration of the cruise?

Thanks!

Yes, it's true, when Indy sails from the UK, there are more restrictions on indoor smoking, and they remain in effect for the entire cruise. However, I don't know if this applies to the transatlantic cruise that leaves from the UK and ends in the US.

Yes no smoking inside at all

If it was in the Caribbean 1/2 the Casino is allocated for Smokers TELL THE SMOKE THAT!!

I found on the Freedom that the smoking on Decks was more free than on Indy as well including smoking at the Sky Bar

SHOULD BE BANNED and my wife is a smoker SHE AGREES

Also for all sailings from Australia! I have also been told repositioning cruises from Hawaii to Sydney also adapt Australia's stricter no smoking indoors policies.

  • 6 months later...

Can anyone who's been on IOS lately comfirm which side is the smoking side of deck 4 and 11/12? Last I was on her it was the Port side but RCCL's website says all ships are now Starboard except for Oasis class. We want to book a balcony on deck 10 for an upcoming cruise and would like to stay away from the smoking side.

Thanks

Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy.

Royal Caribbean updated the smoking policy September 2013 and the above policy is in enforcement on all ships with cruises departing on or after January 1, 2014.

As a non-smoker, I was pretty happy to read this. On our last cruise, the balcony next to us had smokers and their smoke kept drifting on to our balcony
