Irving Nature Park/Rockwood Park info

We will be in St John NB on Sept 18th 2013 via cruise ship. This will be our fourth visit to this beautiful city so we are looking for something outside the city. While leaning toward the Irving Nature Park both sound like they would make for a wonderful day. My question: Must we rent a car to get to either or is there public transportation which will not only get us there but also get us back to the ship. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

You might be better off asking this on the Canada ports section. I have seen many posts over there about Saint Johns etc.
