IslandToIsland Posted July 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 5, 2013 Is there snorkeling from the beach at JVD or is it necessary to take a snorkel tour?
blue_water Posted July 8, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 8, 2013 We haven't snorkeled there but I've seen reports from others who have found some decent snorkeling from the beach at White Bay further down the bay. If no help here try the more experienced BVI folks on the BVI forum at TTOL - traveltalkonline.com
ryansmom Posted July 16, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 16, 2013 There was great snorkeling in White Bay. And yes, you can do it from the beach. You have to be over near the end where the boats moor though. We moored at the last ball when we were there last year and did a morning snorkel along the coast all the way up to the point between White Bay and Great Harbour. It was my first time I saw a school of squid! Cannot wait to spend 10 sailing the BVI again next year :D
IslandToIsland Posted July 22, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted July 22, 2013 Thank you both for your response. We are booking with BVI360 in Feb and I wanted to be able to spend more time on the beach, but get some snorkeling in also. I'm happy to hear we can do it from the beach. :)
ryansmom Posted July 22, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 22, 2013 The snorkeling parts starts about 1:10 in the end shows you how far out we were to the point between White Bay & Great Harbour...stay along the rocky coastline and venture out toward the boats a little and you'll be fine! LilKintnerBoy Posted August 30, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 30, 2013 Hopefully (if the upload worked) these pics will give you a better idea of the reef area around Great Harbour and White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. When we spent the night in White Bay, we were moored at the far east side of the bay and was about 100 yards off the beach and kinda tucked into the reef . The snorkeling on the reef was great and easily accessible (as seen in the video posted by Ryansmom) During the short time we spent in Great Harbour, we did see a few people snorkeling in the shoal area near the dinghy dock. Hopefully this will give you a better idea of the accessibility of snorkeling from the beaches there.
