If one is dining in a upscale restaurant in London in July, is it better to wear a dress/skirt or trousers? If one is wearing a dress, could one wear tights or would one look terribly old? Are Liberty prints still popular?

Wear what you prefer. I am a dress person so I wear dresses. I also go bare legged even in upscale restaurants if it hot enough. If you want to wear something on your legs look into micro fishnets -- the let a breeze in and are fashionable.

I only wear dresses or skirts when going for dinner in London. And there is nothing wrong with wearing tights :)

It is whatever you feel most comfortable in, there are some very dressy trousers out there or dresses always look nice. If you feel most comfortable wearing tights you won't be out of place.

Do tell us which restaurants you are considering.

Medlar, Gordon Ramsey, La Gavroche, Greenhouse

I'm open for suggestions

La Gavroche has a very good name, cannot comment on Medlar or Greenhouse as we have not been there..yet :)

I have eaten at Gordon Ramsey's (at Claridges) but think it is overrated. But I believe it depends which of his restaurants you are choosing.

One of my favourite restaurants in London is Massimo which is Italian but they specialise in seafood.

At the end of the day it is all about preferences and hopefully you will have a wonderful time.

We have eaten at several of Gordon Ramsey's restaurant and I agree it is a touch overrated. It really depends what you are looking for, if it is Michelin star food then Medlar or La Gavroche are very nice, if it is a good evening out with good food and ambience then others may appeal more.

We love The Ivy, but not everyone does. We just love the buzz and the star spotting (we have seen so many London theatre stars in there) and we have always had excellent food and service.

For a romantic meal (not Michelin star standard) but still good we like Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden.

There are so many to choose from though, that without knowing your tastes it is difficult to advise.

As an aside, Gordon Ramsay isn't at Claridges anymore.

The other thing to be aware of, a lot of these restaurants have waiting lists to get into and getting a reservation might be more difficult than you think.

As I said, it was overrated :D;)
