Helsinki - West Harbour to Market Square Walkable?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

We are going on the Celebrity Constellation and we will be docked at West Harbour. Has anyone walked from the pier to Market Square or around that area? Googlemaps says it's around 2 miles -- which is very doable for us. Walking for us is always are first choice, if possible.

If we decide not to walk or it is not a good option, I have seen from other threads is to take tram 9 into the City Centre. For those who have done this, where do you catch the tram and what stop do you get off at? Additionally, what is the cost of a round-trip ticket? Are CC's accepted or just euros?

Also, for those who been on the Constellation, does Celebrity provide a shuttle into town as an alternative option?

Just trying to figure out all possible options. Like I said though, if it is walkable, that is always are first choice.

Last, any must sees besides the Rock Church?

Thanks in advance.

For me too. :)

I'm not sure if you'll be at quay LMA or quay LHC but as you talk about tram 9 I assume the former.

Tram ticket from machine : 2.00 euro

Day ticket from mechine7driver: 7.00 euro

Ticket from driver: 2,70 euro

Regardless if you plan to walk or take the tram from LMA you have to pass the ferry terminal/tram stop There are ticket machines at the tram stop in front of the ferry terminal.

I recommend you ge off at the main railroad station and walk the rest of the way.

If you want to walk all the way, just continue past the ferry terminal on the right side of the road. Route is marked. It will

turn right and pass on the seaside of two harbour magazines. Apart from that its straightforward.

At the end of the bay turn right and follow the harbour two blocks SE and two blocks NE until you reach the Boulevard at the end of the small boat basin,

Follow the Boulevard to downtown and then along the Esplanade park (north side recommended for

tourists, south side is mostly administration) to the market.

We visited Helsinki on the Eclipse in June. We walked into town from the ship, no problems. We collected a free map in the terminal building, and a very helpful tourist information lady recommended a good route to the city centre. We walked to the entrance to the port, round past the Radisson hotel then left past the flea market and along Bulevardi. At the end of Bulevardi, you will join the Esplanade which leads down to the Market Place and the Cathedrals.

The Stockmann department store has coffee shops and an excellent food hall with pastries etc, and City Hall opposite the Market Square has free wifi and clean free toilets.

Saw the Celebrity Shuttle stop not far from the Stockmann dept store, would have saved about twenty minutes walk but would still have dropped you some way from the Market Square and the two cathedrals. We like walking, and enjoyed the architecture on the way into and from the town centre.

We walked to town with no problem, but we wanted to walk all day. We even walked to the Rock Church, but when we got there it was closed, so make sure you check on your timing.

Hi, Chicknik!

How long of a walk was it to reach the Rock Church?
