ssbeard1 Posted July 18, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2013 I would love some recommendations on local places to eat in each town. We are renting cars in both places with plans to go to Peggy's Cove and Bay of Fundy, maybe as far as Lunenburg in NS. I hope to hear from locals on their favorites. And any place with YUMMY desserts moves to the top of my list. :)
Gunner22aa Posted July 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 18, 2013 In the Historic Properties area (very close to where you dock) There is a great pub called Privateers Wharehouse. I never miss it on trips to the city. Been around forever. Can't help you with St John NB.

Although they provide the basics, like soda plates etc, I would recommend picking up a couple of sides, bread and bottle of wine to enjoy along with your feast. We also continued on the road stopping at Arcadia Maple (not worth it) and then picked up the highway back to Halifax making a complete loop of that Peninsula. If you come the opposite direction going to the Lobster First, you can then visit Peggy's Cove making the loop that way probably avoiding the bus crowds. maryann ns Posted July 18, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 18, 2013 If you want lobster done right then do go to Ryer's. In Lunenburg there are lots of restaurants. For lunch, Magnolias is my favorite.
RickT Posted July 19, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 19, 2013 Are you more interested in the quality of food, or the view/scenery? As mentioned, Privateers Warehouse in Halifax has a nice view and if you are lucky the Bluenose will be in town and docks right out front of the pub. Saltys also has a nice harbour front patio. Both of the above are more "pubs" than restaurants. If you are looking for a nicer restaurant in Halifax I'd suggest any of the following: Elements (in the Westin Hotel near the pier) http://www.elementsonhollis.ca/ Ryan Duffys (more of a steakhouse) http://www.ryanduffys.ca/halifax.html Ultimately you can't go wrong with any of the top ten listed on Tripadvisor. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g1555466-Halifax_Regional_Municipality_Nova_Scotia.html
ssbeard1 Posted July 19, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted July 19, 2013 Thank all of you very much. Will definitely try Ryer's for lobster. Appreciate the tip on doing the loop in reverse to avoid the buses. Privateers or Saltys sound wonderful - they seem to have the local flavor I'm looking for. :)
maryann ns Posted July 19, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 19, 2013 Just wandering the Halifax waterfront you will find lots of places. One place for lots of calories is the stand for Beavertails: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/beavertails-halifax
scotian1 Posted July 20, 2013 #8 Share Posted July 20, 2013 Here is a link to a lengthy list of eateries within walking distance of the cruise ship terminal in Saint John. It includes fine restaurants, pubs and fast food places. http://directory.uptownsj.com/group/dine/forum/topics/list-of-uptown-restaurants Here is trip advisor's reviews for them. http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurants-g154960-Saint_John_New_Brunswick.html
SpokaneDan Posted July 20, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 20, 2013 Another vote for Ryer's near Peggy's Cove. It is a pure "unadulterated" lobster shack experience hosted by knowledgeable, friendly local proprietors.
mexico8 Posted July 26, 2013 #10 Share Posted July 26, 2013 Just wandering the Halifax waterfront you will find lots of places. One place for lots of calories is the stand for Beavertails: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/beavertails-halifax I was chuckling thinking of people from other countries when they read about "beavertails". You might assume (wrongly) they are from an animal. They are a pastry with different toppings - kind of like a very flat pancake with sugar or syrup etc. Wendy
