What a difference from 1983

When I was 15 years old, in 1983, my parents took me on a trip to california. We flew direct from dc(dulles) to San Francisco. The flight left about 9am so we were served breakfast. Then a couple of hours later we were served lunch. this was in coach. It was on a 747. I remember one lady had an entire center row of seats to herself. These days they do not fly 747's domestically and you barely get one meal that you must pay for much less two free meals. Also the planes are packed so full, it is rare to get an empty seat next to you

Captain's Dinner February, 1991 Carnival Jubilee to Mexico

The Petit Filet was every bit as good as the filet served in the steakhouse aboard the Carnival ships of today.

The second menu is from a family dinner in August of 1963 aboard the SS United States. My dad (military 0-6) commanded we six kids to have a "no thank you portion" of the Russian caviar. I remember we laughed at eating fish eggs.

Kangaroo tail and Green turtle--different times, different times...

And iced celery was exotic...

Would like to see this policy instituted.

Not so very long ago, passengers from the same cruise line

could go on board other ships of the same line and have lunch!

I distinctly remember reading that, right here on CC.

Perhaps one of these long-term cruisers can verify?

Why can't we do this today?..

..if two/three Carnival ships are alongside the pier at St.Maarten, or wherever?

That would be so so cool, not to mention a great hospitality gesture!

.

Years ago, you also use to be able to go on board the ships and hang out with your family before they cruised.

I just saw someone on another thread mention the night gown designs on the bed at turndown. haven't seen anyone mention that here. My wife and our cabin neighbors wife weren't sure if they liked it or not. That changed to towel animals I guess. Just like the parade of sparkling cakes turned to singing and dancing.

I remember having my gown turned into a "towel" type animal:D I was a bit surprised and told dh...hmmm not sure about that:D BTW...it was a beautiful slinky gown!

My first cruise was on Premeire's Oceanic. I won it at my high school graduation party. I didn't know what to expect since the Love Boat was my only point of reference! I remember walking onboard and felt like I had to duck since the 8 foot ceilings had mirrors on them. I guess I was expecting a grand staircase like the love boat! I didn't take many pictures but here is one reflected in the mirrors on the ceiling as we waited to disembark. Sorry about the pic. It was taken thru the plastic photo album page with my phone. We stayed overnight in Nassau and went to their private beach the next day. Because my best friend looked like she was 25 instead of 17, we had an interesting night out in Nassau with two other teen girls and a group of waiters from the ship. If my parents only knew how we went all over the place with these guys! Champagne limo rides thru the streets of Nassau to little known speakeasy type bars.... Never in this day and age! Here's me in front of the "ship" (which my 17 yo daughter says looks like a barge)

And last... Here's my bed in our cabin. We were on the bottom deck by the elevators.

I also remember going to the "show" and a waiter bringing around a tray of desserts. I picked up something that looked like blackberries on cream cheese but my friend told me it was caviar. Did not like it. She ate it instead! I also remember getting up and doing a conga line thru the dining room and sitting at the slot machines so that we would get free drinks! Also enjoyed the midnight buffet but didn't take a pic of it. The tender to the private beach was air conditioned and had a steel drum band playing while we sailed to it. I loved the experience. Too bad it took 16 years to get back on a ship.

My first cruise was on the Jamica Queen. We sailed for three nights to the Bahamas from Port Everglades. My dad got a last minute "florida resident" special and he paid $99 for each of us. The room was an upper/lower all it has was a small vanity and a door for the bathroom that had a toilet and shower we had a small sink in our room. I was 9 and remember there wasn't a casino per say. There was a row of slot machines and my dad would let us play. The shows were topless..the waiters danced with flaming baked alaska on their heads...spinning them it was something else. It created a life long love of cruising. I just found slides my dad took..need to get them printed..

The Mardi Gras was our honeymoon cruise so my wife had a few sexy night gowns with her. She has'nt wore anything like that in many years.

But we still had a fantastic time...if I could just figure out how to post pics...I have a great pic of dh looking out on the ocean and a picture of the ship. I guess I should try to figure out how to do it!

My first cruise was the Carnival Festival in September 1987 out of San Juan. OMG we had such a great time! I don't remember the price but do remember it was pricy for the year. We cruised to 5 islands in 7 days. We were hooked on snorkling after that and the blue carribbean water. It took us 5 years to cruise again after that but have cruised at least once a year almost since then.

I remember the animals made out of my nighty. That was freeky! The festival was a great old ship I think it was the sister to either the Marti Gras or the Carnivale. Small but so much fun and the wait staff were so excellent. We wanted to book it again for next week but alas the air was way too much. We are going on the Dream out of Port Canaveral in 7 days!

They did this on our 1st cruise as well but our room steward never did one for me. We met another couple that we hugh out with and she talked about having her gown shapped into different designs and could not decide if I would like that or not.

Reading these posts has stirred up some memories for me.

The first cruise ship I was on was the Ile de France. Our 5th grade class was allowed to tour it on a field trip in NYC. It was so impressive to see the third class theater-red curtains, then the second class theater-blue curtains, and finally, the first class theater-gold curtains.

I didn't get to take my first cruise until 1993 when we went on the Carnival Celebration. We loved the production shows, the steel bands on Lido, the midnight buffets, and the tours of the galley and the bridge for any who were interested. I was hooked. We've taken one, sometimes two cruises a year ever since then.
