BREAKING NEWS: Carnival Victory: 44 Day Dry dock

Recommended Posts

Remember how long Triumph stayed in Mobile after the fire? That was just for the mechanical repairs and addition of the new redundancy systems. They didn't do any of the 2.0 additions in Mobile. That was done in Freeport and only took a few weeks for the cosmetics. I think Mr Pete is right about the length of the drydocks pertaining to the new mechanical upgrades as opposed to a "Sunshining". That's a whole lotta engineering that's got to be done to upgrade the mechanicals and it doesn't happen in two weeks.

Exactly! I agree that these long dry docks appear to be taking place, but I dont think ANY of these dry docks are to Sunshine anything! They are for the new safety measures announced after Triumph, and 2.0 upgrades with maybe some other new minor upgrades. No Sunshining.

Love how you just throw your fabrications out there like facts. What 'other' lines were sitting idle?

Fabrications? Want facts well here you go. You can apologize later.

I see this on multiple threads. All the other lines are building and carnival isn't doing anything until 2016. Lets look at some facts.

RCI

Last ship built was allure of the seas in 2010. Next ship being built in 2014. A 4 year span.

During that time carnival introduced two ships.

Ncl

Between the jade in 2006. And epic in 2010 a span of four years carnival built 3 ships while ncl sat idle in shipbuilding. Then ncl had another idle period from 2010- 2013 between epic and breakaway and carnival produced another ship.

Carnival has 24 ships

RCI has 21

Ncl has 12.

Royal Caribbean's next ship goes into service in 2014 and is currently under construction. The keel laying for the Quantum just took place and the first steel cutting for the Anthem of the Seas took place at the same time. Royal Caribbean will have produced two new ships before the end of 2015 with a third Oasis Class ship to go in service by 2016.

Yes you are correct. My point is that cruise lines sometimes takes a break in ship building.

While you have a good point, consider the sunshine transformation. This dry dock was scheduled for 49 days, but was delayed to allow time for the engine whatever to arrive and engineering to take place. During this time the ENTIRE ship was gutted and a partial deck was added and vandalism was noted. I don't think this will happen with freedom. I think it's safe to say that the freedom will receive more than just 2.0 upgrades and a fire system, considering the time length of the sunshines dry dock.

Building new ships is a very cyclic process. Even though no actual construction may be taking place there is usually a lot of planning and research that goes into designing a new cruise ship.

Sunshine is a case study in how NOT to do it. I bet Carnival thinks long and hard before doing it again.

I agree 100%. Just some come on these threads and say, we'll ncl and RCI are building ships while carnival sits idle. I just wanted to point out facts that all cruise lines do that.

Kinda like what Royal Caribbean did after stretching the Enchantment. That turned into quite an engineering nightmare and expenses were way more than originally planned for. Royal decided to not stretch any of the other Vision Class ships and just went and designed the Radiance Class.

Exactly. And I think the Sunshine name is FAR MORE TARNISHED than Destiny ever was. And the thing hasn't even made it to these shores.

I would like to also note that the Carnival Magic will receive an "extensive upgrade" in early 2015...

How early are you talking?? We were planning on taking the kids on the Magic in June 2015. This would be great if this is true.

How so? If you mean new ship orders, well I guess you could say the same thing about the other lines just a few years ago while carnival was building the other lines sat idle in shipbuilding.

That certainly is a boat load. Sorry but your facts don't support your earlier comment that other lines were sitting idle. Just because there's no keel laying doesn't mean they're sitting idle. Your claim is just another attempt to make Carnival look competitive for no good reason.

My guess would be she will be sent over seas

That would make the most sense. There's plenty of time in that date range for a trans-atlantic trip and a drydock before it begins a European season.

Though, other than the standard 2.0 bars, I have no idea what they could put on the Magic. The only crazy upgrade I can potentially think of would be to follow through on your rumor for the Vista-- relocate the casino to deck 4 and put new specialty restaurants where the casino used to be (complete with dining space out on the Lanai).

Not questioning you but questioning sending magic over seas? Carnival has a good thing in Galveston, why would they take the magic away from there for any long period with the exception of a drydock?

agreed, that doesn't make any sense to me either.

Not sure. I think the Magic will be "stale" for Galveston by 2015. My guess is that as the Magic leaves for her 2 month dry dock, a new ship will replace her in Galveston. The Magic would then be fitted for a different market, most likely Asia, and sent over seas. Hope that answers your question

You started on my next question...

If the Magic leaves what will replace the Magic in Galveston?

Since the Magic out of Galveston has one of the highest per day ticket costs, maybe the Vista will replace her in 2016?

if you look at ships which are historically transferred from domestic main lines such as carnival and rccl, to international markets, typically they will transfer the oldest among the fleet, such as holiday to ibero cruceros, etc.

granted, in transferring the spirit and legend to the ozzie market they bucked that trend a bit, but they are also still not 'new' ships, and imo were transferred with the intent to establish a 'premium' presence in the ozzie market (look at the competition).

however, transferring a few year old ship overseas, i find to be unlikely. carnival has plenty of ships among the fleet that i think will be transferred before magic will be.

You are referring to a ship being transferred from Carnival to another brand, not to another cruising market which are of course two different things.

actually i was referring to the prospect of a ship being transferred from carnival to another brand (such as in the example of holiday to ibero cruceros), and the spirit and legend being transferred to australia, and the carnival australia subsidiary which was formed in coordination with that re-deployment. further, legend is said to be only sailing seasonally per information available, and thereby at this time can be considered to still be 'in the fleet'. so, quite frankly, perhaps they are two different things, but i was referring to both of them. :)

Costa has done the same thing. They sent one of their spirit class and another smaller ship there. Not their larger ships.

Maybe a european season and will send another ship to Texas.

If he is correct about the length of drydock. I could see that. I could see them sending the magic to a larger drydock since she is bigger in Europe. Then doing a season like sunshine before retuning home.
