Getting to Venice, Murano/Burano, Koper to Portoroz, Katakolon to olympia

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Is there a vaporetto stop near where the ship docks that takes you to St Marks Sq and back again?

As I understand it it doesn't go down the grand canal, but as we have been to Venice before and normally walk to Piazza Roma sq then get the line 1 vaporetto to St marks sq we are wondering if there is a quicker way in?

Also was wondering if Murano or Burano is worth a visit? if so how would we get there please/how long does it take/how much does it cost?

Re: Koper - Was wondering also if it easy to get to Portoroz and how do we do that please, cost/distance. Would you say it is worth going or could suggest somewhere else.

Katakolon - Is it best to do the ship tour or is it easy to do yourself as gather there was a train that took you there but has stopped, although I thought there was a regular bus but could be wrong?

Thank you

Babby

Vaporettos' go from the Piazzale Roma, and some cruise ships offer a shuttle bus to there but I am unaware that Thomson does. Thomson usually offer a tender at cost to near St Amarks Sq.

From the Piazzale Roma, you can walk to the sights (allow 30 to 40 minutes to reach the Piazza San Marco) or take an water bus on the public-transit network. (The No. 1 vaporetto is the most popular water bus, with plenty of scenery to watch as it zig-zags its way up the Grand Canal to the Piazza San Marco and the Lido.)

Here is a post I did last year about how we got to Piran (a bit further along than Portoroz but if you get going early there's no reason why you shouldn't visit both!)

Koper:

We caught the bus to Piran as although Koper is a pretty and very clean place – it is quite small and being Sunday, extremely quiet. We had a late sailaway (23.00) so decided we had loads of time to do a Diy trip. The tourist desk on the quay have maps of Koper and gave us a timetable for buses to Piran. Be sure to ask for the Sunday service timetable and get them to mark the bus stop on your map. It’s about a 10 minute walk. We caught the 10.15 bus which actually was about 10 minutes late but got to Piran by 11.00 having passed through Izola and Portoroz on the way so it was a bit like a tour anyway.

Piran is charming; old, picturesque, quaint nooks and crannies, and has a buzz about it with a café culture, lovely promenade walk, church which if you climb up rewards you with great views and a lively square with lots of cafes. Incidentally the café on your right as you enter the square does good coffees at 1.50E and you can also use the loos there.

Buses go back from where you were dropped off (it’s the end of the line) on the hour but be there early as the one we caught at 13.00 left 5 minutes early. It’s a long wait for the next one if you miss it so worth being there well before departure time.

We had plenty of time to look around Koper when we got back – we had toyed with the idea of getting off in Portoroz and getting the next bus back but decided against it (we thought we’d probably seen most of it from the bus driving through) but there would be plenty of time if you wanted to do that too. Fares from Koper to Piran were 3.10E each way (I think!) but a good and cheap excursion.

I'd definitely recommend using the bus to get to Piran (or Portoroz - it's the same one) as it's cheap and a great day out.

Hope that helps! :)

Hiya

When I was in Venice on Majesty last year there was a route that went from the cruise port straight to St Mark's Square - it wasn't classed as a vaporetto as such, and as you say didn't go down the Grand Canal, it follows the route that the cruise ships take out of Venice. It was super quick though!

When we got off the ship we walked up to the dock building as if we were going to walk to the people mover, and the point to board this route was just in front of the dock building - we had to walk past it to buy the ticket and then come back to the boarding point.

Hope this helps!

Taxi to Piran €30 each way max 4 people. We were a party of 7 so booked a van €100 return at the kiosks on the exit to the harbour

Venice we took the People mover then Vapereto down the Grand Canal very nice but took about 1.5 hours in all. On the return got a private taxi €80 took 20 mins bit of a treat but not too bad for 7 given the public transport had been just under €60 on the way in.

The Aguilia boat goes from the port as an alternative and is quicker than the Vaperetto but as already stated does not o den th Grand Canal

We took a ship's coach to Portoroz, which took about 30 minutes. Portoroz has a lovely, full-service beach surrounded by restaurants.

We took a shuttle from the ship to San Marco, which included an excellent commentary. You can pick up a vaporetto near the railway station, which is a short walk from the cruise terminal. If you want as much time in Venice as possible, this is what you need to do, as the shuttle doesn't leave for quite a while after docking.

Go to Murano if you actually want to watch glass blowing. It's a long way and will eat into your hours. it all depends on what else you want to do. You can easily buy glass souvenirs in the city centre.

Hello, we were in Venice the other week. We took the ship's shuttle to St Marks square, then you turn left and 2 piers along the no 7 goes straight to Murano. We loved it - a quieter Venice with far less people. It was too hot to see glass blowing but a lovely place to wander - I'm not over keen on that Murano glass but that was the place to buy it. We were in Venice overnight so used the ship's shuttle ($15) and also bought a 12 hours vaporetto pass.

Google Katakolon Express for Olympia - they pick you up in a coach at the port and whip you there and back for 10euros each! I think it was about 10euros to get into Olympia which included a museum which we didn't manage to find. We liked Olympia, it was a nice wooded area. Katakolon is a nice little port also with shops, cafes and a beach.

They also do a trip to Athens if you're going there.
