Venice to Rome by Train

TERRIER1

Recommended Posts

I have an additional question for trains out of Venice. We are thinking of taking a train from Venice to Paris rather than fly. How best to research this? Recommendations? Thank you.

The Man in Seat 61 site is always a good place to start: http://www.seat61.com/Paris-to-Milan-by-TGV-train.htm#.Ulq4NMVza70 . Scroll down on this page, and you'll find a video showing the Paris-Milan journey via TGV.

To check train times and booking options check here: http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/ *NOTE: When they ask you for your country, put in Italy or France - if you put in USA or Canada, they boot you to the Rail Europe site.

Basically, you go either via Milan to connect with the TGV to Paris, or to Munich to connect with the night train. If you go via Milan, you will have to change train stations, but as long as you give yourself some buffer time this shouldn't be a problem. If going this route, you may also price out the Venice-Milan ticket separately - or even price out what a Venice-Turin + Turin-Paris ticket would cost (the same TGV that starts in Milan stops in Turin - again, this option would require a station change in Turin, but a relatively simple operation, and Turin is smaller).

We have travelled extensively by train in Italy. Never had a problem. We typically buy our tickets in Italy since our travel plans can be fluid when it comes to what date and time we want to travel. You can save some money by pre-buying your ticket a few days in advance. You can also save money by carefully reviewing the train choices-some trains are more expensive than others (and usually faster). We have been told by people who bought tickets on line on sites other than Trenitalia that overpaid by quite a bit for doing so.

We usually travel second class. We travel fairly light-one bag each-and we keep an eye on our luggage. The overnights are very good if you get a roomette of whatever they are called. We have done a full day in Venice, boarded the train around 10PM, and then detrained in Naples after a good sleep. We did not want to waste a day travelling since we had done this route before. It worked well.

I think that we would only be concerned about pre booking if we were travelling on a busy day-a holiday, etc. There are usually lots of trains and seats available on the popular routes. This has been our experience.
