Footwear for Mt. Vesuvius

My husband and I will be going on a Mediterranean Cruise in July 2014. We're stopping in Naples and plan to go on an excursion that takes us to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. Thanks to other Cruise Critic members who have posted photos during their cruise reviews, I've noticed that the terrain up Mt. Vesuvius is rocky, uneven, and, at times, sandy. I'm wondering what type of footwear would be appropriate for this. Initially, I was planning on wearing sneakers, but after seeing these photos, I'm reconsidering. For those who have been there, what did you wear?

Sneakers will be fine; the walkway is mostly small pebbles until you reach the top, where it is rocks and dirt. You absolutely do not want to be up there in flip-flops or sandals, but closed shoes (like sneakers) will work.
