Hotels in Rio de Janeiro?

Liz,

The hotels in Rio are safe. It's the streets that are not.

I honestly don't recall the name of the big hotels in Rio. What I would advise you to do is to go to http://www.frommers.com, http://www.fodors.com and http://www.tripadvisor.com and see what's recommended.

I don't know where Princess docks, but you can easily get a taxi to the pier from your hotel....any hotel. Does it really matter if the price differntial is a few dollars for the taxi?

I'd probably consider staying in Ipanema beach rather the Copacabana beach, it's a little more mellow and just down the road.

Sorry I can't help you more.

Jane

Lots of good hotels in Rio - we stayed at the Sheraton closest to Ipanema - it has it's own little beach. We got it a lot cheaper through our travel agent than you can get it from the cruise lines. Leblon(spelling) beach is at the north end of Ipanema and is probably safer - south of downtown Rio are many other beaches and hotels. There are not any hotels close to the pier - and I wouldn't want to stay in that area at any rate! The dock is at the commercial dock in the bay - not on the ocean. You just have to be very careful on the streets and on the beach - don't take valuables or big cameras when you go by yourself. Patti

We stayed in Ipanema and selected the hotel based on the reviews we read. It was a smaller 3 star hotel. We were very satisfied with the decision. I am sorry but I can't recall the name but that was not the reason for the post.

We arranged for the taxi to the dock through the hotel. I think we got an uncle or some other relative. They tried to drop us away from the terminal in the middle of the road system. We refused to get out. I don't think he had the correct papers to enter the terminal and he was clearly very concerned. However, he eventually took us to the terminal. Just make sure that the taxi is going to take you right to the terminal. This was 2001.
