charleylake Posted July 6, 2005 #1 Share Posted July 6, 2005 Does anyone have any information on any shore activities that might be planned at the Baltic port of Warnemunde(Berlin). It is very near Rostock and I was wondering if there would any transportation from the dock to Rostock. There you could rent a car if that location didn't offer much. We really are not interested in an 11 hr. excursion to Berlin and were hoping to hear some other options. Would appreciate any help you might have.
harbormaster Posted July 6, 2005 #2 Share Posted July 6, 2005 We took a Baltic cruise last summer (July) and did Warnemunde and Rostock on our own. When you walk out of the port and into Warnmunde town, go to the train station which is very close, there. We bought a round trip ticket on the train to Rostock for under 2 Euro per person. It takes about 15 minutes. Get off in the main area and take the tram into the town center (it runs constantly and there is a really good tourist office in the train station that can direct you in English). The town center has a long area with shops and a city market. You can visit the churches which were bombed in WWII and other sites. We had a lovely time and a great German lunch in one of the cafes. We then returned to Warnemunde and walked down the quay to the end, just watching the boats and the people, all of whom were having a nice holiday. It was a nice relaxing day and we were glad we didn't take the very long trip to Berlin.
Irish Lass Posted July 10, 2005 #3 Share Posted July 10, 2005 Your message was just what would appeal to us, and the specific advice is great. What other tours did you take or not take? There is so little information about the tours on line, it is difficult to make any informed decisions, except no to an 11 hr ride to Berlin. We sail Aug 20. Thank You
jhcrossfield Posted July 11, 2005 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2005 If you walk past the small port area, which looks similar to Newport Beach in parts, you will come to a very natural, unpopulated long sand beach with trails along the woods off to one side. It is a beautiful place to stroll and swim. Just ask around the shop area for directions. It's about a 10 min walk from there.
English Voyager Posted July 11, 2005 #5 Share Posted July 11, 2005 I realise that you will be getting off of a cruise ship, but as an alternative to the train,if it is nice weather, why not consider a boat trip from Warnemunde to Rostock. The boats dock quite close to where the cruise liners berth. Rostock is an interesting city.Be sure to seek out the centuries old astronomical clock in,I think, the cathedral. Warnemunde, itself,is the seaside resort for Rostock, and is very attractive.
airships Posted August 10, 2005 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2005 My partner and I will be on the August 20 Voyager sailing, and we also do not want to take the long bus ride to and from Berlin. If anyone wants to talk about getting together for some local exploration (Warnemunde, Rostock, etc) send us an email at dj@airships.net
