Best thing to do in Cabo

We are going there in December and not sure what to do. Are there any suggestions for the best tour? It is for my husband and me. Thanks for any recommendations!

The best bargain is the glass bottom boat trip out to the arch. They will take you round trip, or will take you to Medano Beach, or will let you off at Lovers Beach and will return to pick you up. Cost varies from 8 to 15 dollars per person if you book it on the shore.

Another nice trip is a van or taxi to San Jose Del Cabo about 18 miles across the tip of the peninsula. They will usually stop where you want, so if you check the things you want to see and present the list to a taxi driver, they will give you a nice tour at a good price.

In late December, you should see lots of whales, as well as dolphin and flying fish. The flying fish are hard to spot, the first time we saw them, we thought that they were birds! Be sure to be topside (or on your balcony) about an hour out of Cabo.

The dolphins will very likely be alongside, escorting the ship into the bay.

There are lots of whale watching tours in Cabo, and at the time that you are there, you will most likely see both mothers and their calves.

I second the glass bottom boat trip.Book it shoreside, the cost will be half or less than from the cruiseline if you book shoreside. It should cost arount $10 per person. Then have them drop you at Medano beach where there are some restaurants and hotels. I suggest you have lunch at Cilantros at the Pueblo Bonito hotel there. That restaurant is just perfect. We go there every cruise. You can walk back (maybe a 40 minute walk) or catch a taxi for around $15-20 back to the port.

Jet ski rentals are about $1 per minute (ie 60 minutes == $60) at Medanao beach. They are always fun. Sometime we each get one and race each other or sometimes we share one.

here's a picture of Cilantros - One great spot !

About how much does it cost to take a taxi or van to San Jose del Cabo from the Marina in Cabo San Lucas?

The cost will depend on your "negotiating skills" !! I usually check the price of the ship tours and use about half of that as a starting point. After that, you can try to adjust the price to something you are comfortable with. The van drivers will be more flexible if you have enough people to fill their van. The taxi drivers will go lower if you have four people.

Most of the drivers like to haggle over the price, but they need to make a little to feed their families.

I'm not a gambler (I'm the one that pays for the bright lights and "free drinks"), but we have been in Cabo in March, April, May, September, October, and November, and we have always seen whales. November is a bit late, but I would not bet against it!

What about in late March?

  • 3 weeks later...

We are frequent visitors to Cabo. Whales are plentiful from December through February. There may be some as early as November, some late ones through the first few weeks of March. There will be many whale watching tours sold at the pier. We like the catamarans such as Pez Gato. They are small enough to manuever quickly but yet large enough to feel safe. The larger boats are very slow and not able to quickly move to the site when whales are spotted. The small motorboats get dangerously close. There seems to be no rules preventing boats from harassing the whales, so these little boats try to give their passengers a thrill by approaching really close.

Another activity we like is sea kayaking. Rentals can be found all along Medano Beach. We kayak out towards Lovers Beach and can pull it out of the water to enjoy the beach for a while before heading back. A less strenuous way is to get on a water taxi over to Lovers Beach. There will be plenty of them available to take you back.

Coach Jeff - the Pacific waters are much cooler than the Caribbean, plus much rougher. I don't know where they can take you on a helmet dive where you can actually see anything. The area is not good for snorkeling either, although there are some bays between Cabo and San Jose where we have seen snorkelers.
