Good grief, this thread is giving me a hang over just reading it!

How in the world does anyone drink 15 drinks and still need more on a given cruise day? Yikes, 8 days of this and you are going to have a swollen, sore liver!

Sorry, I know will get pelted for this, but I am just thinking of health here. How about an excursion or two?

Yikes, how about no judgement?:o

IMO, live and let live.......

I have done four cruises with open bar (not Cheers, but the same general idea) and I will say that service has been MOSTLY good.

The worst was on Destiny back in 2011, but that ship had a lot more issues than just crappy bar service. Most of the wait staff and bartenders seemed pretty annoyed to have to deal with us. They would routinely pass by those of us with booze cards in favor of guests buying drinks individually. It was especially bad around on the pool deck and also with them not wanting to give us shots (which the plan includes).

The rest of my open bar cruises have been pretty good in the area of service. It seems that the Fantasy Class ships do better for some unknown reason. Maybe a better guest to crew ratio?

Anyway, that bad experience on Destiny has now been overshadowed by the great bar staff we had on this years booze cruise on Fascination. The guy at the lobby bar was awesome! He would just line up glasses for us and keep 'em coming until we couldn't shoot anymore.

The folks in the nightclub and Beverly Hills Lounge were also very liberal with drinks. The pool deck waiters were bringing us buckets of beer and Jager shots like they were going out of style.

It's certainly possible that the Cheers program has helped our group out, since the wait staff seem more used to dealing with the drink cards.

It's hard to say whether the program is "worth it" for me, because I wouldn't drink the way I do with the drink card if I didn't have it. I would bring my own and only purchase a few from the ship each day. But it is so nice to have the card and simply stroll up to a bar and get any drink you want without worrying about the ever increasing Sail and Sign tab.

So I'll say that the Cheers program is likely worth it for most folks that enjoy getting sideways and having a great time. Especially if you drink all 15 per day. Even if you just drink beer, it would be $75 buying them individually.

Cheers everyone! :p:D

It depends on many things. A person's size and tolerance being chief among them. Sure 15 sounds like a lot taken by itself.

But if you spread that out across a whole day where the person wakes at 10 and goes to sleep after the club lets out at 3, that's only one per hour. Many would still be stone cold sober at that rate of consumption.

Or in the words of Doc Holliday:

"I have not yet begun to defile myself"

Just a small thing, the small shooter in a souvenir glass is not include, so you have to paid for....

It is true that you can't get the special shot the bar servers bring around the dining room during dinner. BUT, if you've made friends with your bartenders during the day, they will replicate that special shot into a full size drink which is covered under the CHEERS program.

Granted you don't get the souvenir shot glass, but while the others at your table who are not on CHEERS are drinking a shot they paid $8.95 for, you are drinking the same thing in a full size drink for free :)

After cruising on Norwegian and getting the ultimate beverage package for free (they run that promo all of the time), it makes it really hard to want to sail with Carnival. I love Carnival...don't get me wrong. I feel they should run some beverage promos occasionally to compete with other cruise lines. You can't even use your beverage package on their private islands. You can with Norwegian. Also, the policy of everyone in the cabin having to purchase the package is unfair. Does anyone know if there are any exceptions to this rule if someone can not drink due to health, religion or alcoholism?

be aware that you are replying to a 3 year old thread.

however to answer your question, they do not allow exceptions at all even with a doctors note.

I am going on a cruise in January 2018 on the Carnival Elation. Do you have to buy the drink packages. I am not a big drinker but do like a drink or 2 during the day. When I've cruised in the pass they did not have these packages. So I am confused. All help appreciated.

No you don't have to buy the drink package. It's a choice. If you are just having a drink or 2 then you are better off just paying the per drink price each time you get a drink. If you are going to drink 5-6 or more per day, and everyone 21 or older in your cabin is also drinking that much, then the package is a better deal.

No you are not charged for the last day... If you go on a 7 day cruise, it is usually Sunday-Sunday which is 8 days theoretically, but since you are off the ship by 8:30am *and* none of the bars are open to even get a soda, you aren't charged for that day.

You are allowed unlimited virgin drinks and sodas, both before and after you hit your 15 drink limit.

Actually, this is not true...(none of the bars are open )...on our disembark day...for prob the last 4 years....our group has hit the casino bar and used our sign and sail card for a couple of drinks each before we got off the ship

Yes they do. My dad is disabled and my mom was able to only pay for herself for the cheers program.
