Helipad

Recommended Posts

Can someone please give me directions on how to get to the helipad on the freedom class? We are on Indy next month and would love to check it out for sail away. On Liberty we didn't see it.
Go to Deck 4, go out the door to the outdoor prominade, walk toward the front of the ship, when you get to the stairs walk up them, continue forward, walk up more stairs, you are there.

enjoy

For us, the deck four exit was the door we entered when first getting on the ship. When you board and start through that door, look to the right and you will see the stairs the previous poster is referring to. Man is it windy up there!

Additional comments. Ships dockside can be either port or starboard [usually there is a preferred side, but they need to vary sides in order to conduct periodic crew lifeboat drills]. The directions work for either port or starboard, just walk toward the bow. The helipad is usually open 24/7, but will be closed in rough seas and during medical evacuations. You are in full view of the bridge, so even if it is late and dark, don't do anything you mind the bridge seeing with their night vision equipment.

Note that while most RCI ships including Freedom class have open helipads, Oasis class helipads are NOT generally open to the public.

As an aside, the last ships in the Celebrity Solstice class do not have helipads, but rather heli lift points. They look much like the helipads other than the big "Do Not Land" markings. Upon inquiry I was told that many rescue helicopters were too heavy to land, and even that if they were light enough to land, pilots generally preferred to operate in hover mode. The helipads have quick release fencing that fold down for heli landings, while the heli lift points do not.
