monas queen Posted October 30, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Theodore Scull says in his Lofoten review that "some rolling may occur .......rounding the North Cape". It is very rare for the Hurtigruten ships to divert to go round the North Cape. Normally they take the more sheltered route to the south on their way to Honningsvag. I have been on a few winter trips, always on the older ships, and never yet been round the Cape. Am I just "unlucky"? I have seen the North Cape from the sea a few times, by the way, but always when on a cruise, so I haven't missed out! Already looking forward to my trip on Lofoten in 2014, which will be her 50th anniversary year. She is a real treasure.
SarniaLo Posted October 30, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 30, 2013 I have been 4 times with Hurtigruten in Norway (3 times with MS Lofoten) and never "rounded the North Cape". Hurtigruten's route indeed takes the sheletered channel between the island of Mageroya (where the North Cape is) and the mainland. Since Honningsvag is one of the port of call, rounding Mageroya would be a bit of a waste of time... Maybe it is a slight writing approximation, meaning that the sea can get a bit rough as you get further than the North Cape, in the Barents sea (which it actually often does! :) ).
